How do I install a car seat without the base?

I had a baby a few months ago and bought a car seat for her. I live in the city and usually take ubers or taxis if I need to go somewhere, so I can’t really install the car seat base anywhere. Could someone explain how I’d install a car seat without the base?

Congratulations on the baby! It’s good that you’re keeping her safety in mind—thankfully, installing a car seat without the base isn’t that difficult! All you have to do is follow these steps:
  • Place the car seat, rear-facing, onto the seat.
  • Pull out the seatbelt and thread the lap section through the car seat’s lap belt guides.
  • Pull the shoulder belt through (make sure it isn’t twisted). Some car seats have a European belt path, in which case you’ll pull and secure the shoulder belt in the path behind the seat.
  • Buckle the safety belt.
  • Pull down on the shoulder belt to lock it.
  • Try to push the car seat or pull the safety belt to see if it moves. A properly installed seat shouldn’t move more than an inch.
  • Check to make sure the seat is level.
It’s a good idea to practice installing your car seat without its base before you actually need to do so. That way you’ll be prepared and won’t feel rushed, which could lead to mistakes.
