How Do I Grease a Ball Joint?
I’ve recently heard a speaking noise coming from my car when I turn my steering wheel and when I go over bumps. I think my ball joints need to be greased but I’d like to do the job at home. How do I grease a ball joint at home?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing squeaking when making turns or going over bumps! To grease a ball joint, you’ll need a floor jack, a grease gun, heavy-duty grease, safety glasses, and a shop rag.
It’s imperative to use a sturdy floor jack and stands and have someone watch you while you grease ball joints at home to avoid an accident.
Before getting ready to grease your ball joint, make sure your car’s ball joints have a grease fitting that you can lubricate. If you’re unsure, refer to your owner’s manual to make sure you have grease serviceable ball joints. And be sure to put your safety glasses on!
Here are the basic steps for how to grease a ball joint:
- Use a floor jack to lift the front end of your vehicle off the ground and lower it onto two sturdy jack stands.
- Load your grease gun with a heavy-duty grease like Lithium Synthetic or Marine grease.
- Find the ball joint and locate its grease fitting. The ball joint connects the steering knuckle to the control arm and the grease fitting could be on the top, side, or bottom of the joint.
- Insert the grease gun tip into the grease fitting and squeeze the trigger to release grease into the fitting. You should feel the tip snap into place before squeezing the gun trigger.
- Inject just enough grease to expand the dust boot. If grease begins to leak from your dust boot, stop filling the ball joint.
- Carefully remove the grease gun tip and use wipe away any excess grease. You can repeat this process on the other ball joints if they also need grease.
