How do I get a car back to my home that I bought from a private seller?
I want to buy a car from an ad I found online. How do I get the proper registration, title transfer, and insurance in order so I can legally drive it home?
Sounds like you found a good deal on a car! Buying from a private seller can be complicated, but you should be able to get your new ride home.
The first thing you’ll want to check is if the seller has the title for the car. If they don’t, do not buy the car. A missing title could be an indication that something is wrong with the vehicle, or that it is stolen. To transfer the title, you’ll need your signature and the seller’s signature on the document. It’s also a good idea to have a bill of sale.
Before you buy the car, get the VIN from the seller. This will allow you to check the car’s history through a CarFax report to make sure the car’s in good working order.
You’ll also need car insurance to legally drive your vehicle. Call your insurance agent, tell them your plans to buy a vehicle and give them the VIN. You’ll also want to let them know the start date or the day you plan to purchase the car. Once you have insurance, you should be able to go to the DMV to register your car.
