How do I get a car back to my home that I bought from a private seller?

If you buy a car from a private seller, you’ll need to make sure the title and your insurance information are in the vehicle before you drive it.

I want to buy a car from an ad I found online. How do I get the proper registration, title transfer, and insurance in order so I can legally drive it home?
You will need the title and car insurance in order to get your new car legally back home.
The first thing you’ll want to check is if the
private seller
has the title for the car.
  • If there’s no title: Do not buy the car. A missing title could be an indication that something is wrong with the vehicle, or that it is stolen. Ask them to order a replacement title before you take possession.
  • If there is a title: Transfer the title into your own name. Both you and the seller must sign the document.
It’s also a good idea to get a
bill of sale
and run a CarFax report using the VIN.
The next thing you’ll need to do is buy
car insurance
. You can do this without registration in most states.
  • Shop around for a policy: Get
    car insurance quotes online
    and pick the best rate for your situation.
  • Set a date with the agent: Give the agent the VIN and choose a start date for your policy.
Once you have insurance, you then can drive the car home and then go to your local DMV to register your car.
