Active from 1985, the Saturn subsidiary of General Motors had only just begun to explore fuel alternatives in the real-world market before its production came to an end in 2010. Did Saturn have electric cars?
No—Saturn never got to produce any fully electric cars. The car brand did, however, offer two hybrid options towards the end of its production—the Saturn Aura and the Saturn Vue.
Both of these were mild hybrids, meaning the electric engine only played a role in starting these cars’ combustion engines and allowing their engines to turn off while the cars were coasting, braking, or at a full stop.
When we think of today’s hybrids we typically think of regenerative braking, improved fuel economy, and power assistance, but Saturn’s hybrids weren’t nearly there yet. The EPA gave these models a fuel economy rating of 25 to 26 MPG in the city and 32 to 24 MPG on the highway.
Though they were headed in the right direction, the green vehicles from Saturn’s final days would never quite compare to the hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs we see on the streets today.
How to decide if going electric is right for you
There are plenty of pros when it comes to owning an electric vehicle and the environmental harm-reduction is only the beginning! Modern EVs are adored for fun and quiet driving with futuristic designs and a boatload of modern technology. Not to mention, EVs come with a slew of financial benefits:
A federal tax credit of $7,500
Reduced long-term fuel and maintenance costs
The primary major cons of any EV are higher upfront costs and expensive repairs. However, you’ll also have to account for a major change in lifestyle that you may not be ready for. Ask yourself the following questions:
Do I have easy access to public charging stations in my area and on my commute? A worst-case scenario is thinking you could make it to the grocery store with your last bit of charge and falling up short as you pull into the charging station-less parking lot.
Does the driving range on an EV work for my daily driving needs? EVs have considerably shorter ranges on a single charge than their gas-powered alternatives. Things may get inconvenient if you find yourself constantly relying on a full charge.
How many times do I plan to drive long distances? This is another area where a shorter driving range can become a major hindrance. Long trips will require lots of research for charging breaks or an alternative vehicle altogether.
Do I have a garage at home where I can conveniently charge my EV? The most convenient at-home charging typically requires a 240V outlet connection which you may not be able to manage if you rely on street parking.
