Do you get a public defender for traffic court?

I just got a speeding ticket, and I was going super fast. I know it’s going to result in points on my license, but I can’t afford to get a lawyer to help me get out of it. Will I be appointed a public defender?

Depending on the state you’re in and how fast you were going, a speeding ticket can add quite a few points to your license. It’s always a good deal to bring a lawyer if you want to fight a traffic ticket, but in most states, you don’t get a public defender for traffic court.
Generally speaking, public defenders are not assigned for the following types of cases:
  • Municipal violations
  • Traffic violations
  • Family court cases
  • Civil court cases
