Can you take the written driving test without an appointment?

My schedule is hard to predict so it’s hard for me to book a written driving test. Is it possible to do a walk-in test at the DMV?

Having a busy schedule can definitely make it difficult to book a time! Some DMV’s will let you write the knowledge test without an appointment—as long as you arrive an hour before closing. However, this could depend on your state and individual testing center. It’s best to call your local testing center to ask if they accept walk-ins.
The downside of walking in for an appointment is that the wait times are unpredictable. On a busy day, you could end up waiting for a few hours!
If this is the only option that can accommodate your schedule, make sure to study the materials in the driver’s handbook thoroughly. You want to pass on the first try so you don’t have to wait again.
The knowledge test is a set of multiple-choice questions that will cover:
  • Traffic laws
  • Road signs and rules
  • Safe driving practice
  • Laws for your city/town
There are also many free practice tests online that are available for free so that you can test your knowledge before the actual test. In most cases, you would need to score 80% or higher to pass the written test. If you fail, you would have to go back on another business day when you are free.
After you pass the knowledge test and are eligible for the road test, you will need an insurance policy to be an authorized driver for the vehicle you’ll use for the test. Getting
