Can you play music during a driving test?

Whenever I’m nervous, I use music to cool my nerves. I was planning to do the same thing during my driving test next week, but my Dad said they won’t let me play music in the car! Will I be allowed to play music during my driving test?

Music is a great tool for keeping your cool and staying calm in tricky situations. Luckily, you’re allowed to listen to your music on low volume during the
driving
test—so long as you can hear all the examiner’s instructions and feedback.
Keep in mind that listening to music during a test may put you at a slight disadvantage. It may not be against the rules, but jumping into a new car and flicking on the radio can come across as careless to the test proctor. While they can’t mark you down for turning on the radio, listening to music has the potential to bias the examiner against you.
If you can live without music, it may be best to wait till after your test to tune in to your favorite tracks. But if you’re nervous you won’t be able to stay calm without music, try some of these tips for keeping your cool under pressure:
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Talk your problem out with a friend
  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Practice as much as possible
Remember, all states allow new drivers to make a certain number of mistakes on their test without failing. You aren’t expected to be a perfect driver from the start, so take a deep breath and do your best!
