Can you flat tow a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4?
I have a Ram 1500 with four-wheel drive. Can I flat tow it behind a large motorhome?

Flat towing a Ram 1500 4x4 is possible—but only if you’re towing it behind a motorhome for recreational purposes. You cannot tow a two-wheel drive Ram 1500 under any circumstances—so the following only applies to 4x4 trucks.
You’ll have to take some very careful steps to ensure that your truck is being towed safely, without causing any damage to its transmission.
First of all, be sure that you’re engaging in “recreational towing.” This means that your vehicle isn’t damaged or being towed due to mechanical issues. (If this is the case, it’s in your best interest to call a professional tow truck.)
Then, follow these instructions as outlined in your owner’s manual:
- You can only flat tow your truck while it’s facing forward—never backward
- The transfer case must be in Neutral—there are detailed instructions in the manual on how to do this safely and properly
- The transmission must be in Park for recreational towing
- The electric parking brake must be released while actively flat towing
