Can two names be on a car title?

My partner and I are planning to buy a brand-new car. We’ll both use it regularly. Can two names be on a car title?

Yes, you can have two names on your car title, but the details matter.
Here’s what you need to know:
  • The first person listed on a car title will serve as the primary titleholder.
  • The next person listed will be the secondary titleholder.
  • It’s your responsibility to ensure both names are listed and in the correct order.
  • If you plan to sell the vehicle, both titleholders will be required to sign the title to approve the sale.
Even though one owner will be considered the primary on the title, you’ll still be considered co-owners of the vehicle.
