Can I sleep in my car with the AC running?

I’m going on a road trip throughout the Southwest this summer. To save money, I’m thinking about sleeping in my car. I’m just worried that the high temperatures may require me to run my AC. Can I sleep in my car while the AC is on?

While wanting to turn on the AC during a trip to the Southwest is understandable, studies show that sleeping in your car with the AC running may lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. This can lead to a trip to the hospital or even death.
Instead of using the AC, use a few of these other tips:
  • Use a portable fan that runs on batteries.
  • Put curtains on the windows or tuck fabric into the windows and roll them up.
  • Crack the front windows about a half-inch to an inch for ventilation.
  • Grab an assortment of light blankets.
  • Pack light pajamas.
You might also want to pack an emergency kit and add either roadside assistance or
towing and labor coverage
to your car insurance policy for a little peace of mind on your trip.
And if you haven’t done so already, reviewing your car insurance before your trip is well worth the effort. By shopping around with the
