Will the 2022 Dodge Viper Really Come Back?

‘90s kids rejoice. The sports car we all grew up loving, the iconic
Dodge
Viper, could be making a comeback. Details are a bit conflicting, but the rumor mill is certainly churning.
Dodge isn't new to the world of high-performance sports cars, as the Detroit automaker dazzled previous generations with their famed Dodge Charger. However, the Viper was considered one of Dodge’s only true supercars, though it had no trouble fitting in with its muscle-car brethren.
The Viper debuted in 1991 but has been out of production since 2017. According to
Car and Driver
, that may be changing.
The Dodge Viper was discontinued in 2017, but gearheads are hoping it could return as soon as next year.

What makes the Dodge Viper special?

Other than just looking really cool, the Viper had some impressive under-the-hood specs when it first debuted in 1992. The original Viper held an impressive 8.0-liter V-10 engine. Contributing to the Viper's development were designers from Lamborghini, which was owned by the Chrysler Corporation at the time.
The original Viper was built for speed and speed alone. It didn’t have exterior-mounted door handles or air conditioning, as this would slow performance. AC would be added on future models, along with a high-fidelity cassette player. The iconic Viper stripes wouldn't appear until 1996.
The Viper went through a total of five generations, the most recent being in production from 2013-2017. Officially, the Fiat Chrysler Group declared Vipers would be discontinued due to poor sales. However, there’s been speculation that the real reason for the discontinuation was due to new regulations involving side curtain airbags.

Almost as soon as the Viper was discontinued, gearheads demanded its return. Rumors have suggested that a revival might happen soon. Car and Driver recently speculated what they think the specs will be.
They anticipate that Dodge will be ditching the V-10 in favor of an aluminum V-8 in order to update the "old iron-block anchor" it used to rest on. This would make the new Viper more like its domestic competitor, the Chevy Corvette.
Still, it’s anticipated the new Viper will produce around 550 horsepower on stock models. 700 horsepower may be available on future supercharged models.

Rumors for the Viper's revival began in 2018. Since then, Stellantis, the current parent company of Dodge, has made no formal announcement about the Viper making a comeback. In fact, when questioned about the revival, Stellantis flat-out rejected that a new Viper was in the works.
As of now, the Viper’s resurrection could happen one day, but until anything is confirmed, any reports or rumors are likely wishful thinking.
