, Subaru has confirmed that the Solterra will go on sale in America in mid-2022.
The Solterra will be different from any other available Subaru. A sneak peek has revealed that the Solterra will have a special new interface.
The SUV will have comfortable rear leg-room and cargo space, comparable to the Subaru Forester. However, the Solterra will be overall smaller than the Forester.
Like other Suburus, all-wheel drive will be standard. According to the reveal, each model will have great ground clearance and advanced safety tech.
The Forester and the Outback currently offer 8.7 inches of ground clearance. So, the Solterra will probably make at least that amount of space (or even better).
In terms of styling, the Solterra will have subtle but definite Subaru motifs.
In conjunction with Toyota, Subaru is developing an all new all-electric vehicle architecture. It’s not a surprising partnership, considering Toyota owns about 16% of Subaru.
While the two companies are working together, each calls the EV platform by a different name. Toyota calls it the e-TNGA, whereas Subaru calls it the e-Subaru Global Platform.
The e-Subaru Global Platform is what the 2023 Solterra SUV will be built on. This new platform will also be used for future Subaru models, so it will be exciting to see what new technological advances Subaru and Toyota can bring to the SUV table.
Subaru has stated that it has shifted its independent EV development resources to this project with Toyota. Presumably, they’re making some good progress.
It looks like Toyota and Subaru are giving extra attention to their electric vehicles.
The Toyota “counterpart” to the 2023 Subaru Solterra is the Toyota bZ4X. They will look quite similar visually, and likely functionally as well.
Luckily, the Solterra has a much more pleasant and easy to remember name. Solterra vs bZ4-what now? Not really fair competition there.
Electrification is a good business choice these days, as both the strictness of emission regulations and the direness of climate change surge upwards.
