background
As of September 2023, the
Wisconsin
gas tax is $0.309 per gallon—and that amount has been in effect since April 1, 2006.
The cost of owning a car in 2022 seems like it’s never been higher—and that’s partly due to skyrocketing gas prices since the onset of the war in Ukraine and high gas taxes in states across the nation.

How much is the Wisconsin gas tax?

The Wisconsin gas tax is $0.309 per gallon—the same rate it has been since April 2006.
To Wisconsin drivers who aren’t happy with that rate, this might be unwelcome news—but the good news is that drivers didn’t face a jump in the gas tax like many other states saw in 2022.
At that rate, taking Wisconsin’s average gas cost into account, it costs Wisconsin drivers around $50 to fill up a car’s gas tank.
Let’s see if Wisconsin drivers have hope of any gas tax relief in the future.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin’s gas tax is not scheduled to increase within the next year, but some Wisconsans are hoping for a total suspension of the state’s gas tax in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, skyrocketing gas costs, and an unstable economy.
Wisconsin’s Democratic Gov. Tony Evers proposed an 8-cent gas tax increase in his 2019 budget, but that was quickly shut down by Republican state legislators. But there is nearly no likelihood that Wisconsin will see a gas tax suspension.
And while that means higher car ownership costs for drivers, it also means important funding for the very things that your car depends on—roads, bridges, and other important state infrastructure.

How high are gas prices in Wisconsin?

According to
AAA
, the average gas price in Wisconsin as of September 2023 is $3.534 per gallon.
That's a little less than the price a year ago—and more than a dollar less than the highest recorded average of $4.923 that Wisconsin saw in June 2022.
But the cost of fuel will vary depending on which area of the state you are in. For instance, Superior County has the highest average price at $3.751/gallon, while Appleton County has a much lower average of $3.355/gallon.
And those driving diesel engines will be facing higher prices right now—the state average for diesel fuel in Wisconsin is currently $4.220/gallon.

Which state has the highest gas tax?

Wisconsin’s gas tax is on par with other states like Utah, Vermont, and Maine. While it doesn’t compare to Georgia—which have no active gas tax at the moment—Wisconsin’s rate pales in comparison to the gas taxes in Pennsylvania and California.
Check out this table for the gas taxes in each state as of September 2023.
