background
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the Japanese automaker’s 2022 lineup. But there are plenty of other fuel-efficient models available if the Outlander isn’t for you.
As the price of fuel increases, consumers are more and more concerned with the fuel economy of the cars they want to purchase. Mitsubishi is the 19th largest automaker in the world. As of 2022, they offer a number of sensible options for people concerned with fuel economy.

Which Mitsubishis have the best gas mileage?

The top three Mitsubishi models for fuel efficiency are the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), the Mitsubishi Mirage, and the Mitsubishi Mirage G4:
  • 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: up to 74 MPGe combined
  • 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage: up to 39 mpg combined
  • 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4: up to 37 mpg combined
The Outlander PHEV stands head and shoulders above the rest of the Mitsubishi lineup in terms of fuel efficiency because it’s the only hybrid vehicle available from the automaker. Mitsubishi doesn’t currently offer a hybrid option on anything but the Outlander.
Even though Mitsubishi has a limited lineup, much smaller than those offered by Toyota or Volkswagen, let’s break down their options a little further. We’ll dive a little deeper into their two cars and four SUVs including the options available for them.

The most fuel-efficient Mitsubishi cars

Mitsubishi only currently offers two cars. The Mirage is a hatchback, and the Mirage G4 is a sedan. Both vehicles fall into the subcompact car category.
The 2022
Mitsubishi Mirage
is a subcompact hatchback that offers an estimated 39 combined miles per gallon (mpg). That’s the best offering in fuel efficiency from Mitsubishi when it comes to standard vehicles. The Mirage gets an estimated 36 mpg for city driving and 43 mpg for highway driving. And the starting MSRP is as low as $14,645.
However, you might not want to get too excited about those numbers just yet. The Mirage isn’t very highly-rated by experts—Car and Driver gives it a dismal 2.5 out of 10. The biggest pro of the vehicle is the fuel efficiency followed by the low price—you get what you pay for, and the vehicle is considered the most basic of basic vehicles inside and out with slow acceleration and high noise levels.
The other subcompact car offering from Mitsubishi is the 2022
Mirage G4
. This sedan offers an estimated 37 combined mpg, which is only slightly lower than the hatchback. The Mirage G4 gets an estimated 35 mpg city driving and 41 mpg highway driving. The MSRP starts as low as $15, 645, only a thousand more than the Mirage.
But again, the ratings on this car leave something to be desired—Car and Driver gives it a 3 out of 10, only half a point higher than the Mirage. The gas mileage and price are the biggest assets of the Mirage G4, but it suffers from the same drawbacks as the Mirage. In fact, many experts believe that the Mirage and the Mirage G4 aren’t worth it, even with their low pricing.
If price isn’t a determining factor for you, you may want to look into a fuel-efficient alternative from another automaker, like the 2022
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
. This model comes in with an estimated 53 combined mpg, although it has a significantly-higher MSRP of $24,050, nearly $10,000 more than the Mirage.
If price is the biggest factor for you, and you’re set on purchasing a new vehicle, the 2022 Mirage might be the best bet for you, particularly if you’re fuel conscious.

Most fuel-efficient Mitsubishi SUVs

Mitsubishi’s line-up consists of four distinctive SUVs: the Outlander PHEV, the Outlander, the Outlander Sport, and the Eclipse Cross.
The 2022 Outlander PHEV is the clear standout in fuel efficiency in this uncrowded lineup. It gets an estimated 74 combined MPGe, which is great when you’re able to charge your vehicle. But if you’re on a long trip where charging isn’t possible or you simply forget to charge your vehicle, the estimated combined mpg drops to only 26. And with a starting MSRP of $36,995, you better remember to plug your SUV in.
Edmunds gives the Outlander PHEV a tepid 6.8 out of 10 possible points, which it classifies as below average. Unlike a traditional Outlander, the Outlander PHEV doesn’t come with third-row seating, and the small size of the gas tank limits the overall range of the vehicle. Like all the cars in the 2022 lineup, acceleration is also a problem on this hybrid.
After the hybrid, the 2022
Eclipse Cross ES 2WD
($23,395 starting MSRP) shows a significant drop in fuel efficiency, but it’s the best non-hybrid SUV Mitsubishi has to offer with an estimated 27 combined mpg. The city and highway ratings are 26 mpg and 29 mpg respectively, which are fairly-average stats for a compact SUV. J.D. Power calls the Eclipse Cross good enough, but in a competitive field of compact SUVs, good enough isn’t really good enough.
Third on the list of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the Mitsubishi lineup is the Outlander 2WD. Like the Eclipse Cross ES 2WD, the Outlander 2WD gets an estimated 27 combined mpg. However, it sits lower on this list because of the increased disparity between the city and highway mpg ratings. The Outlander 2WD gets 24 mpg in the city and a fairly impressive 31 mpg on the highway. It has an MSRP of $26,995.
Edmunds gives the 2022
Mitsubishi Outlander
a good 7.9 out of 10 possible points. While this isn’t a phenomenal score, it’s the highest-rated Mitsubishi vehicle. The 2022 model kicks off the fourth generation of Outlanders, and the improvements make this a promising vehicle, although it still struggles with acceleration like all Mitsubishi models.
Even though it’s third on the SUV list and seventh overall for Mitsubishi’s fuel efficiency, the Outlander is the best vehicle in the 2022 Mitsubishi lineup.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
