Range Rover Sport 3rd Row Seating Review

The third-row seating in the Range Rover Sport is a bit cramped for adults, but it makes up for it with its commanding size and luxury and safety features.

background
The Range Rover Sport is a good three-row SUV if children are seated in the third row—but adults might be cramped. It has just 35.8 inches of legroom in the optional third row. However, the good folks at Land Rover included plenty of advanced safety and luxury features to make up for it.
As your family grows, you’ll often find that your vehicles get bigger in order to keep up. That

sitting in your driveway can turn into a

in no time.
If you’ve got a family of five or more but desperately want to avoid the dreaded minivan, you could always consider buying an SUV with third-row seating. Picking a good one can be tricky, though, which is why

What is the Range Rover Sport’s 3rd row like?

As a midsize luxury SUV, the Range Rover Sport can fit up to seven passengers. This is possible thanks to the additional two seats included with the optional third-row package
The third row is surprisingly roomy, but the seats themselves are a bit small and therefore more suitable for children than adults.
Remember that the third row is an optional upgrade for all seven trim levels—it does not come standard. Unfortunately, if you want the extra seats, you’ll have to pay for them.

Space and comfort

Now we’re getting down to the million-dollar question: Is the third row comfortable? The mere existence of a third row isn’t enough if people can’t actually sit in it for extended periods.
How exactly do we measure comfort, though? The answer is in inches! Specifically, we’re looking at legroom and headroom dimensions. Here are the interior measurements for a Range Rover Sport:
  • Third row: 35.8 inches of legroom, 35.8 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 40.4 inches of legroom, 39.6 inches of headroom
  • First row: 42 inches of legroom, 39.3 inches of headroom
You can see from the numbers that the Sport’s third row is much tighter than the other two, especially the luxurious second row. Kids should fit back there just fine, but adults might feel like a bit of a sardine.
Let’s compare and contrast the Sport’s interior dimensions with some of its competitors in the midsize SUV market:

Is the Range Rover Sport good for big families and long trips?

For families with small children, the Range Rover Sport’s third row should be just fine for daily driving. However, it can easily get cramped back there on long trips or if any luggage needs to be stowed.
The third-row measurements for the Sport look pretty good compared to some of the other leading SUVs in the field. Still, there are only two extra seats, which are pretty small to boot. If your family needs a third-row SUV, you can save some money by finding a cheaper make and model with comparable measurements, like a
Kia Telluride
.
Regardless, as a high-end luxury SUV, the Range Rover Sport certainly does have some enticing features:
  • Advanced safety features: All Range Rover Sport trims come standard-equipped with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and parking sensors.
  • Off-road performance: This might not appeal to everyone, but if your family is outdoorsy, then you couldn’t do much better than a Land Rover—a brand famous worldwide for rugged, dependable off-road performance.
  • Tech features: If you’re a sucker for extras, then you’ll enjoy the keyless entry, push-to-start capability, digital instrument panel, and 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Things get even wonkier in the higher trims, like a refrigerated front console!
At the end of the day, your family’s specific needs will decide whether or not the three-row Range Rover Sport is an ideal fit.
