What is an interstate highway?

Interstate highways span multiple states and connect major population centers across the United States.
A defined numbering system governs most interstate highways. North-south routes like I-87 tend to have an odd number, while even numbers generally indicate that an interstate runs east to west. The most important roadways, like I-5 or I-10, usually end in a zero or a five.

What states does I-87 run through?

Unusually for an interstate highway, I-87 passes through only one state,
New York
. It runs the vertical length of the state from the Bronx to the Canadian border.
The highway earns its interstate distinction because it connects drivers to several major thoroughfares running to the New England and Mid-Atlantic states.
