When do you need a replacement title?

You’ll need a replacement if your title is:
  • Lost
  • Stolen
  • Altered
  • Damaged
  • Not received by the BMV
  • Illegible
You also need a title to prove or transfer ownership, such as during a
vehicle registration
or if you plan to sell the car. You cannot perform any of these tasks with a lost title.
Your car’s title is the legal document that proves you are the car’s primary owner. It contains information regarding your vehicle, such as your
vehicle identification number
(VIN), and personal data, such as your name and address.
If you’re dealing with a lost car title or the original title is damaged, you’ll want to get a replacement as soon as you can.
Keep in mind, you cannot request a duplicate title if you know where the original title is located.
