How big is the gas tank on a Hyundai Sonata?

The 2022 Sonata is outfitted with an average size gas tank, but the precise size of your Sonata’s tank will depend on which
trim level
you go with.
Here’s a breakdown of gas tank sizes by trim for the 2022 Sonata.
As you can see, there are three engine options for the Sonata—a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 180-horsepower 1.6 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a 290-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine
As you can see, trims with one of the 2.5-liter variations come furnished with a 14.8-liter gas tank, while trims with the 1.6-liter engine come equipped with a 15.9-liter fuel tank.

How to check your Hyundai Sonata’s gas tank size

If you’re not sure which trim you’re rocking, there are other ways that you can figure out the size of your Hyundai Sonata gas tank.

Measure the gas tank

Just grab your tape measure or borrow one from your local tailor, and measure your gas tank’s height, width, and length in inches. Multiply those values together and you have your gas tank’s volume in cubic inches. Divide that number by 231 (the number of inches in a cubic gallon), and you have the number of gallons that your gas tank holds.
So, for example, if your gas tank measures 15 inches, by 17 inches, by 14 inches, your total tank volume would be 15x17x14=3,570 cubic inches. Divide that number by 231 and you arrive at your gas tank’s capacity: 15.45 gallons

Check your owner’s manual

The best way to determine your car’s fuel capacity is by looking it up in your owner’s manual. This information is found in chapter two of the 2022 Hyundai Sonata owner’s manual. If you’ve misplaced your physical copy, you can find a digital copy on
Hyundai’s website
.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

You can always figure out your Sonata’s fuel capacity the adventurous way—by driving until your tank is nearly out of gas and then filling up your Sonata at the nearest service station. When you’re done pumping your gas, simply note how many gallons it took to top off your tank, and that will give you a rough idea of how much your gas tank holds.

How to save on fuel costs in a Hyundai Sonata

The 2022 Sonata has a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 27 to 32 miles per gallon, depending on the trim. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine iterations return the least efficient ratings, while variations decked out with the regular 2.5-liter motors and the 1.6-liter turbos offer fuel economy ratings in the low 30s.
No matter which engine you have under the hood, there are always ways to save on your gasoline bill. Here are some tips:
  • Keep your car in good working order. Adhering to your manufacturer’s
    recommended maintenance schedule
will keep your Sonata running in tip-top shape, eliminating any fuel-wasting inefficiencies that may develop.
  • Slow down.Engines burn more gas at higher RPMs, so ease up on the gas and watch your savings account grow.
  • Avoid idling. Letting your car run idly wastes gas. Instead of warming up your car in the winter before you drive, let it warm up as you drive. Cold cars may be no fun to sit in, but you may find some warmth knowing that you’ll save money on gas.
