How to replace a lost driver’s license in New Jersey

Whether you’ve lost your driver’s license, it got stolen, or it was damaged beyond recognition, you’ll need to get a replacement card as soon as possible. If you get caught
driving without a license
in New Jersey, you could be fined up to $500 or be imprisoned for up to 60 days.
Don’t worry, though—getting a duplicate license in New Jersey should be pretty straightforward.

Replacing a lost New Jersey license online

You can order a duplicate driver’s license through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s
online portal
. You’ll need the following items to get your license online:
  • A valid driver’s license number
  • Your Social Security number
  • A valid email address
  • A working credit or debit card for the $11 fee
  • Access to a printer (if you want to print your temporary license)
Licenses within 90 days of their expiration date are not eligible for the online process. If you fit the criteria for online replacement, you must replace it online—not in person.
Your new license will be mailed to you within 14 calendar days, but you can print an interim license after completing the online process. This temporary license will be valid for 30 days after issuance. If you find your old license after ordering a new one, you’ll have to destroy the old card.

Replacing a lost New Jersey license in person

New Jersey driver's license

. In most cases, to get a duplicate license in person, you’ll need to bring the following to your appointment:
  • Documents that meet New Jersey’s
    6 point ID Verification rule
  • Proof of your Social Security number

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
