background
The 2022 Honda HR-V has a ground clearance of 6.7 inches in its AWD models, which increases to 7.3 inches on FWD configurations. Upgrading to a Sport trim on either drive type gives the HR-V a very minimal ground clearance increase—7.4 inches for FWD and 6.9 inches for AWD.
SUVs are typically sought-after for their roomy cabin and cargo space and enhanced off-roading potential. But while most off-roading enthusiasts look at an SUV’s drive type, wheel size, and engine power when deciding on a vehicle—ground clearance plays a crucial role, too!
We've, has put together a guide with everything you’ll need to know about your Honda HR-V’s ground clearance.

Honda HR-V ground clearance

The Honda HR-V’s ground clearance varies slightly depending on what trim you select. Here’s a breakdown of how ground clearance plays out in the latest model:
  • LX: 6.7-7.3 inches
  • Sport
    : 6.9-7.4 inches
  • EX
    : 6.7-7.3 inches
  • EX-L
    : 6.7-7.3 inches
Each trim level gains a slight increase in ground clearance when 2WD (FWD) is equipped instead of AWD. The Sport trim also increases the HR-V’s ground clearance thanks in part to its larger wheel size.

Honda HR-V ground clearance over the years

Introduced to North America in 2016, the Honda HR-V has only had a limited run in the American SUV game, and its ground clearance hasn’t changed much during that time. Like other SUVs, the HR-V has gotten a little higher now than it was at the start, but the change may be too minimal to be noticeable.
Here’s a look at the Honda HR-V’s ground clearance since its American debut:
  • 2016 (first model): 6.7 inches
  • 2017: 6.7-7 inches
  • 2018: 6.7-7 inches
  • 2019: 6.7-7.3 inches
  • 2020: 6.7-7.4 inches
  • 2021: 6.7-7.4 inches
  • 2022: 6.7-7.4 inches
Note that the precise number for your Honda HR-V’s ground clearance will depend on its model year and trim—specifically whether it’s a 2WD or AWD build, or Sport trim. However, in the HR-V, the ground clearance numbers really don’t move too much model to model thus far.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

You might be wondering why ground clearance measurements are worth discussing. Because ground clearance measures the space between the lowest point of your car’s chassis and the ground, its measurements give drivers who want to off-road a better idea of how much their SUV can handle.
In other words, higher ground clearance measurements mean there’s more space between the car and terrain, which is helpful in preventing damage to your undercarriage while navigating uneven pathways.
Experts generally recommend a ground clearance of 8.5 inches at the minimum for safe off-roading. Unfortunately, this means that even at its peak ground clearance of 7.4 inches, the HR-V isn’t quite suitable for any wild off-roading adventures.

Is the Honda HR-V a good off-road vehicle?

With roomy seating, great 29 mpg combined fuel economy, and excellent rear visibility, the Honda HR-V is a versatile and reliable SUV for families and road-tripping—but not necessarily off-road tripping.
With only 7.4 inches between its chassis and the ground, the HR-V can’t really handle the unpaved routes more classic off-roaders like the
Jeep Wrangler
can (at 10.8 inches off the ground at that!).
While its 55.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity gives it more space for suitcase and camping gear than the
Mazda CX-30
or the
Jeep Renegade
, the HR-V is better suited to take you to the campground parking lot rather than through the woods to your campsite.
That said, at $25,065 MSRP for the heartier Sport trim, the HR-V comes at nearly half the cost of big bad off-roaders like the
Ford Bronco
Sasquatch or the
Toyota 4Runner
TRD Pro. So if you’re looking for a lower-costing SUV and you’re not too keen on off-roading anyway—the HR-V could be a solid choice for you.
