How big is the gas tank on a 2014 Ford Explorer?

Ford’s popular family-hauling SUV offered just one size fuel tank in 2014, no matter the trim you drive. That’s right—the
, and
trims all share the same, 18.6 gallon gas tank.
The Base, Limited, and XLT trims also share the same engine—a 3.5 L V6 Flex Fuel engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and either 2-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The Sport trim is unique in this regard, boasting a 3.5 L V6 Twin Turbo engine, also with a 6-speed automatic transmission, although it only comes with all-wheel drive.

How to check your 2014 Ford Explorer’s gas tank size

If you’re still having trouble determining the size of your 2014 Ford Explorer’s gas tank, there are a few other ways to discern this information.

Measure the gas tank

Checking your gas tank’s volume is actually pretty easy—just grab a measuring tape and a calculator. In order to get the correct capacity, multiply the tank’s length, width, and height. Now divide the result by 231—the number of cubic inches in a gallon. We’re pretty certain your rival in the Dodge Durango did not know this.

Check your owner’s manual

Of course, if you still have your owner’s manual—and it hasn’t been ripped to shreds—you should be able to find your answer easily. Just look up fuel tank capacity or similar phrases and you’ll find an accurate measurement.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

So, if your owner’s manual has been ripped to shreds or tossed in a fire (or in the highly unlikely event that it has simply gone missing), you’ve lost your measuring tape, or you’re not in the mood to do math (no worries, we can’t all be Pythagoras), you can figure out your gas tank capacity the old fashioned way—drive until your tank is empty and hits “E”, and then go fill’er up!
This method won’t give you the exact gas tank volume, but it will give you a relatively accurate idea of your tank’s volume. Just remember not to drive too long on empty—we here at Jerry give you full permission to ignore your father’s advice that you’ll be able to drive from San Francisco to Sacramento on fumes. Not that we know that from experience or anything.

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford Explorer

Your 2014 Ford Explorer’s fuel economy will depend on whether you have two- or all-wheel drive. With two-wheel drive, you’ll get about 20 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, the Explorer gets 18 mpg combined
That being said, there are a few things you can do to conserve the fuel that your Explorer consumes. Here are some tips to turn that gas guzzler into more of a gas-sipper (kinda):
  • Keep up with maintenance: Wear and tear on your Explorer can chip away at its fuel efficiency.
  • Drive carefully: Sudden acceleration, driving aggressively, and sudden braking can all up your fuel consumption, so try to drive at a steady pace as much as possible.
  • Avoid idling, especially in the cold: Idling is a surefire way to waste gas for no reason, so on cold mornings, give your engine no more than a minute to warm up, and then start driving—it will warm up quickly that way.
