How to decode an Isuzu VIN

Your car’s VIN is used for all kinds of car-related services—but what makes it so important?
VINs have been around since the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (
NHTSA
) standardized them in 1981 that VINs really took off. Those 17 digits are organized the same way whether you’re buying a car made in Japan, the Netherlands, or the U.S.

First position: country of origin

A VIN’s first three digits make up the world manufacturer identifier (WMI) code. In Isuzu’s case, the first digit stands for the vehicle’s country of origin
If the first digit is a number between 1 and 4, that means your Isuzu was made in America. For vehicles made in Japan, a J will be used.

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

The two digits after indicate the manufacturer. The type of vehicle is also included in this code.

Positions 4-8: vehicle-specific information

Vehicle-specific information is covered by the next five digits in your Isuzu’s VIN. This code includes the engine and transmission specifications to safety features included in your model. These digits are also useful in narrowing down the exact trim and model type you’re driving.

Position 9: the VIN check digit

The 9th digit of your VIN is a special “check digit”—it doesn’t refer to anything about your vehicle, but it does help authenticate your VIN. This digit keeps people from making up a VIN and helps protect the unique identity of your vehicle.

Position 10: model year

The more vehicles that are produced, the more digits are required to indicate what year a model was manufactured. This leads to some digits being reused over time.
Isuzu uses letters to indicate newer model years, repeating codes from older models. Here are the VIN model year codes from the past twenty years:

The 11th digit of a VIN points to which factory the vehicle was assembled in. Isuzu has plants in Japan, America, and India.

Positions 12-17: vehicle serial number

You may already be familiar with the last six digits of your Isuzu’s VIN—this sequence is your vehicle’s unique serial number. This number is used to accurately identify individual vehicles for registration and legal procedures.
