A Honda extended warranty mimics the original factory warranty on new Honda vehicles and extends it up to five additional years for a total of eight years or 120,000 miles of coverage, whichever comes first. It can cost anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000.
If you’re planning on keeping your Honda well past its original three-year warranty, you might want to look into HondaCare, which extends your coverage and can offer significant protection in case of unexpected pricey repairs.

Overview: what is a Honda extended warranty?

When you buy a new Honda, it comes with a limited factory warranty. This warranty is Honda’s promise to repair, free of charge, certain design-related and manufacture-related issues should they occur.
Honda’s factory warranty runs for three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first)and offers bumper-to-bumper coverage from the day you purchase the vehicle. Honda’s powertrain warranty also covers new Hondas for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
With an extended warranty, you’re guaranteed coverage for the cost of repairs beyond the lifespan of the original warranty. In Honda’s case, this means coverage of the same set of components covered under the original factory warranty.
Honda offers one form of extended warranty. But buyers can choose either eight years/120,000 miles or seven years/100,000 miles of coverage. Dubbed HondaCare, the plan can only be purchased while your Honda is under its original factory warranty.
As well, you can only buy a HondaCare extended warranty from a Honda dealership.

HondaCare: coverage and cost

HondaCare offers extended protection for exactly what is covered in your original Honda warranty, as specified below:
  • Powertrain and drivetrain coverage
  • Electronic repairs and replacements
  • Air conditioning and heating system repairs
  • Chassis coverage
  • Repair and replacement of Honda accessories
You may be responsible for paying a small deductible for repairs, but an extended warranty plan can save you a significant amount of money in case your Honda is saddled with an unexpected and expensive issue to repair.
In addition, a HondaCare extended warranty comes with other valuable services that can help you in times of need. You’ll get:
  • Roadside assistance, including towing, winching, tire repairs, battery jumpstarts, emergency fuel delivery, and more
  • Rental car reimbursement of $35 per day up to six days in case you need to rent a vehicle after your Honda goes in for repairs
  • Trip interruption coverage of $100 per day up to three days if your car breaks down more than 100 miles from your home
  • 24-hour concierge emergency services in case you need help and your car isn’t working
Also, all HondaCare extended warranties are transferable to a new owner for a $50 fee.

What’s covered

A HondaCare extended warranty covers your car’s main components:
  • Engine: Cylinder block, intake and exhaust valves, timing belt cover, piston rings, water pump
  • Air conditioning and heating: Compressor, compressor fan, temperature control unit, evaporator core
  • Drive axle system: Hub hearings, axle bearings, drive lines
  • Brakes: Wheel cylinders, check valve, parking brake assembly
  • Cooling system: Radiator, radiator cooling fan motor, coolant temperature switch, coolant recovery tank
  • Fuel delivery system: Fuel injectors, throttle cable, fuel injection pump
  • Electrical components: Alternator, starter, ignition coil, windshield wiper motor, factory-installed anti-theft system, power seat motors
  • Suspension: Control arms, stabilizer bar, upper and lower ball joints
  • Steering components: Steering column, gearbox, power steering pump

What isn’t covered

HondaCare covers exactly what is written on the contract—and nothing else. It won’t cover normal wear and tear on items such as:
  • Glass
  • Wiper blades
  • Body panels
  • Exhaust system
  • Paint
  • Tires
  • Non-genuine Honda parts
  • Cables, belts, hoses
  • Battery
  • Oil changes and routine maintenance
Brake rotors are not covered under a HondaCare extended warranty, as they are usually considered a wear-and-tear component. However, if there is a documented manufacturing defect, brake rotors can be covered under the original factory warranty
If you’re looking for routine maintenance coverage under your HondaCare, you won’t get it. However, Honda does offer several prepaid maintenance plans to cover your car’s routine car, such as Honda Care Sentinel Service and Honda Care Sentinel Service Plus.

Downsides of HondaCare coverage

Generally speaking, the upsides of an extended warranty plan far outweigh the downsides, as HondaCare offers peace of mind in case you run into unexpected trouble once the original warranty expires.
That being said, there are some aspects of HondaCare that aren’t great:
  • Must use a Honda dealership for repairs: You’ll have to get any extended warranty coverage work done at a Honda dealership. The only exception is if your Honda breaks down in an area outside of towing service to a Honda dealer, in which case you would be allowed to use a Honda-certified dealer for your repairs.
  • Must use genuine Honda parts only: You won’t be able to go to your mechanic for a cheap repair using third-party parts to save a buck. Under a HondaCare extended warranty, only service completed with authentic Honda parts by Honda technicians is covered.
  • Must follow Honda maintenance schedule: With a HondaCare plan, you’ll be required to follow a Honda maintenance schedule using only Honda parts.
  • Must enroll during a certain timeframe: You can only enroll in an extended warranty plan with HondaCare within the first three years of your original factory warranty. You won’t be allowed to buy an extended warranty plan after your original warranty expires.
  • May entail extra costs: Your dealer may ask if you’d like to bundle your extended warranty plan with your financing plan, requiring you to make one monthly payment only for both plans. However, doing so means you’ll be charged interest on your HondaCare plan, just like you are charged interest on a
    car loan

A HondaCare extended warranty can run for eight years or 120,000 miles or seven years or 100,000 miles, depending on how much coverage you wish to buy.

The cost for a HondaCare extended warranty can range anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000, depending on several factors, including:
  • Model
  • Age of the vehicle
  • Mileage
  • Coverage level
  • Deductible
  • Location
HondaCare extended warranty plans come with either a $0 deductible or a $100 deductible. With the $100 deductible, you’ll pay less each month for your warranty coverage.

Buying an extended warranty is ultimately up to you. If you plan on keeping your Honda well past its three-year/36,000-mile factory warranty, it might be worthwhile to invest in an extended warranty.
One alternative to HondaCare is buying
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI). This type of coverage is similar to an extended warranty plan in that it kicks in after your original warranty expires and covers a lot of what an extended warranty plan would. As well, MBI might be offered by your insurer and is regulated by outside parties.
