Hyundai certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty

The Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle warranty is a protection plan that’s available for certain used Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai is already known for its great warranty coverage, so it’s no surprise that its CPO warranty is also solid.
For a Hyundai to be eligible for the CPO warranty, it must pass a rigorous 173-point inspection. CPO Hyundai cars are never older than six years and always have less than 80,000 miles
When you purchase a CPO Hyundai, you’ll receive the remainder of the time and miles left on the original new car limited warranty. This warranty, when sold with a new vehicle, lasts for five years or 60,000 miles
So if your used Hyundai is only two years old, you’ll have three years of limited warranty coverage. If it has 20,000 miles, you’ll have 40,000 more before the warranty wears off
The Hyundai Certified Used warranty also includes powertrain coverage that will cover some vital components after the more comprehensive limited warranty ends. This warranty is based on the car’s original service date, so keep that in mind when you look to buy. The powertrain warranty lasts for ten years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. 
If you choose to buy a Hyundai hybrid or electric vehicle, you’ll also receive a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty that covers the battery. This is hard to live without since the cost to repair or replace an EV or hybrid battery is very high.

What’s covered?

As long as your Hyundai is still covered by the remainder of the new vehicle's limited warranty, many critical components of your vehicle are protected. Those components include:
  • Steering system
  • Braking system
  • Airbags
  • Fuel system
  • Climate control system
Thanks to the powertrain warranty, both the engine and transmission are also covered. If you have a hybrid or electric Hyundai, your battery is also covered under warranty.

What isn’t covered?

The Hyundai-certified used vehicle warranty is not all-inclusive. The warranty only covers defective parts—not parts damaged in an accident or by standard wear and tear
One notable component of a Hyundai that’s not covered by a CPO warranty is the tires. If your tires wear down or you get a flat, you will probably need to handle the cost yourself.

Is a Hyundai CPO warranty transferable?

Yes, you can transfer the Hyundai CPO warranty to another owner should you choose to sell your vehicle. However, the 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty will drop to a 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty if you do this

Hyundai CPO program certification process

One thing that’s great about buying a certified used Hyundai? It limits your risk compared to buying a vehicle in unknown condition. Every Hyundai vehicle has to pass a 173-point inspection and get a vehicle history report before it qualifies for the CPO warranty, so they are generally in better shape than the average used vehicle. 
The inspection includes a thorough examination of both the exterior and interior of the vehicle. They’ll also take a look at all of the core mechanical aspects of the vehicle, such as the engine and steering system
While buying a CPO Hyundai doesn’t guarantee you won’t have any issues, it’s less likely that you’ll run into problems immediately after purchasing the vehicle. And even if you do have issues, you can expect the Hyundai CPO warranty to cover many of them. 

Are Hyundai cars reliable?

Average Hyundai repair costs

If you don’t have a warranty to cover your defective components, you might have to pay for them yourself. That’s why it’s best to know how much a car costs to repair and maintain before you buy.

can easily cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars, so having it be covered is a huge benefit. 
If you have some residual coverage from a prior Hyundai new car limited warranty, you have even more protection. Replacing something like a Hyundai air conditioner condenser can easily cost over $500, but if it’s covered, you’ll only need to pay the deductible. 

Our take: is a Hyundai CPO warranty worth it?

There will always be risks when buying a used car, and a CPO warranty doesn’t clear you of those risks entirely. With that said, a Hyundai CPO vehicle does seem like the happy medium between something new and something used. 
An already-reliable Hyundai equipped with a ten-year powertrain warranty—and perhaps the remnants of a new car limited warranty—shouldn’t give you too much trouble in the first couple of years. On top of that, the ten-year roadside assistance package is a nice added perk.
The biggest downside to the Hyundai CPO warranty is the deductible. Any repairs you need that are covered under your warranty will require you to pay a $50 deductible. That’s a disappointing drawback, especially from a company known for excellent warranty coverage.
