How to check Toyota 4Runner tire pressure
Most modern vehicles have a TPMS that will alert you if your tire pressure gets too low. However, not every vehicle is equipped with this system, and no TPMS setup is fail-proof. It’s a good idea to know how to check your tire pressure yourself, and do so occasionally, to make sure everything runs smoothly.
All you need is a
tire pressure gauge
, which is a fairly inexpensive tool that you can find at most gas stations. Simply remove the valve stem cap from your tire and insert the pressure gauge into the valve stem. You’ll get a reading telling you if you need to add or release air to maintain ideal tire pressure PSI. Another option is using a gas station’s air filling center. Most of these offer tire pressure gauges, but some stations will charge you to use it.
Based on your own reading or an alert from your vehicle’s TPMS display, you may need to add air to your tires from time to time. Even if your TPMS system doesn’t alert you, your car may give hints that the tire pressure is too low. The steering can feel uneven, the handling may seem mushy, and your vehicle’s efficiency might decrease.
If you’re ever in doubt, check your tire pressure right away. And if you find out that your PSI is low, you’ll need to add air.
How often should you check tire pressure?
Even with a TPMS display, you should check your tire pressure at least once a month. If you’re making a long trip, check before you head out, too.
How to tell if your Toyota 4Runner needs new tires
It’s a general rule of thumb that tires should be replaced about every six years. However, you may need to change your tires out more frequently if you put a lot of daily miles on your car.
Rather than relying on a schedule to know when your tires need swapped out, you should instead check your tires for wear whenever you check your tire pressure. If you notice low tread, cracks, or anything unusual, you might need a new tire.
An easy trick for checking your tire’s tread is the penny test. Take a penny and stick it into the tire’s tread with the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head pointed inward toward the tire. If you can see the very top of Lincoln’s hair, your tire is bald and needs to be replaced right away—if you can see much above his ears, your tires are getting worn and you should keep a close eye on them.
How to reset the Toyota 4Runner tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light
Sometimes, you might need to manually
reset your TPMS
light after you’ve properly inflated your tires. In ideal circumstances, the sensor will turn the light off itself once it has detected the tires are properly inflated. If this doesn’t happen, though, you might have to reset it yourself. First, try using the TPMS reset button. On most 4Runners, this is located toward the lower right of the steering wheel. You can also check your owner’s manual for a precise location.
To reset with the button, turn your ignition to on, but don’t start the engine. Hold the TPMS reset button down until the sensor light blinks three times. Then, start your car and wait about 20 minutes.
If that doesn’t work, try driving at 50 mph for 10 or more minutes. The consistent speed might reset the system.
