The Jeep 4.0-liter, six-cylinder engine—usually referred to simply as the “Jeep 4.0” or the “4.0 Jeep”—has an oil capacity of six quarts.
You might think that since the engine is called the Jeep 4.0-liter, it would have an oil capacity of four liters. But that 4.0 actually refers to the engine’s displacement—which is the total volume of the cylinders in an engine rather than its total oil capacity.
What kind of oil does a 4.0 Jeep engine need?
The type of oil an engine uses is just as important as the quantity of oil it needs.
The Jeep 4.0 requires fully-synthetic motor oil with a viscosity of either 5W-20 or 5W-30. If you're not familiar with viscosity ratings, here's a quick overview of what they mean:

So, the first number next to the “W” will also describe the viscosity at a cold start, while the second number describes the viscosity at normal operating temperatures.

How often to change the oil in a 4.0 Jeep engine
You should typically change the oil in a 4.0 Jeep engine around every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every six months.
Sometimes you may need to change your oil sooner than that. Keep an eye on your oil and check it at least once a month. If you notice any of the following issues, it’s probably time for an oil change:
- The oil has changed colors from light brown/amber to black.
- The oil feels coarse when you rub some between your fingers.
- Your engine is making strange noises.
- You can smell oil, smoke, or something burning when your engine is running.

How to change your oil and oil filter
To change your oil, you’ll need to have a filter wrench, a socket wrench, a drain pan, a sealable container for the old fluid, a fresh oil filter, and six quarts of fresh 5W-20 or 5W-30 synthetic oil.
Once you have everything you need, follow these steps:
- Start your Jeep’s engine and allow it to run for 5-10 minutes so it can reach normal operating temperature.
- Shut off the engine and open the hood.
- Locate and remove the oil fill cap.
- Locate and remove the oil drain bolt. Make sure that you have the drain pan in place—the old oil will begin draining immediately.
- While the oil is still draining, use the filter wrench to remove the old oil filter.
- Once the oil is completely drained, install the new oil filter.
- Then, replace the drain bolt and refill the engine with fresh motor oil.
Double-check that you have added the correct amount of oil by testing its level using the dipstick. Then, start the engine one more time and allow it to run for another few minutes while you check for leaks.
Finally, make sure that you store the old oil in a sealable container (an old water bottle or a shampoo bottle works fine), and take it to a nearby recycling center when possible.
