What causes the 2020 Toyota Camry’s battery draining problem?

Battery issues seem to be a common complaint among owners of the 2020 Toyota Camry. Unfortunately, there are a handful of causes and it can be challenging to decipher which one you are experiencing.
One of the most common causes reported by 2020 Camry owners involves a software issue that causes some electrical units to continue draining the battery after the car is turned off
Similarly, a common cause of battery draining issues more generally is a parasitic drain on the battery. In this case, there is an electrical component that continues to suck power when the car is off. This can be the result of a faulty fuse, switch, or relay, and it will require a fair bit of investigation to pinpoint where the drain is coming from.
Another common issue is, of course, just a bad battery. Batteries typically need to be replaced every three to five years. Keep an eye and ear out for the battery light, for longer than normal engine crank when starting the car, and for any signs of corrosion around the battery.
If you notice your battery is draining while driving, the issue is almost always the alternator. However, since the 2020 Camry is so new, this issue is far less common than the ones mentioned above. Alternators commonly last 7 to 10 years, or between 80,000 and 150,000 miles.

How to fix the Toyota Camry’s battery draining problem

In most cases, the best way to deal with a draining battery is to take your car to the dealership or a trusted mechanic, especially if the problem is due to a programming problem.
If you are dealing with a parasitic drain, then you will need to do some digging, checking all of the lights and electrical components to try to find the source of the drain. Taking your car to a mechanic can make this more accessible since they have the tools and experience to do the job more efficiently.
If the problem lies in the battery itself, then the first solution that you should consider is cleaning the battery posts of any corrosion using a wire brush and special cleaning products. If that doesn’t work, then the next step would be to change the battery.
Fortunately, changing a battery is a relatively simple affair and you can save quite a bit of money by doing it yourself. Consult your owner manual to make sure you buy the correct battery for your model, then follow these steps:
  1. Make sure the engine is off
  2. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt that secures the black negative cable
  3. Carefully remove the cable by twisting and pulling
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the positive red cable
  5. Locate and remove the clamp that holds the battery in place using a wrench or ratchet
  6. Remove the old battery (careful, it’s heavy)
  7. Clean the battery tray and cables of any corrosion using a wire brush and battery cleaning solution
  8. Install the new battery in the correct orientation
  9. Repeat the above steps in reverse to secure and reattach the new battery
You may notice that your car idles oddly after you install a new car battery. This is common and happens because the car forgets the fuel settings for idling. To reset the system simply put the car in park, apply the emergency brake, turn the car on, then back off, then back on and let it run for five minutes.
