2019 Toyota RAV4 oil capacity

You will need 4.8 quarts (or 4.5 liters) of engine oil if you want to do a proper oil and filter change on your 2019 RAV4.
Speaking of oil levels—checking your oil levels is just as important as changing your oil and filter regularly. Toyota recommends you do this every time you fill up your vehicle at the gas station.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Toyota RAV4 need?

Of course, Toyota recommends using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an API-certified equivalent. The ideal viscosity rating is SAE 0W-16. If SAE 0W-16 oil isn’t available, you can use SAE 0W-20 oil, but aim to replace this with 0W-16 oil at the next oil change.
API stands for the American Petroleum Institute, which is a certification body for oils. Similarly, SAE is the Society of Automotive Engineers, which grades oil viscosity (thickness).
On the topic of viscosity, that’s where the numbers come in. Take SAE 0W-16, for example. The number to the left of the W tells us how well the oil flows in cold temperatures, and the number on the right tells us the same for warm temperatures. So, an oil with a lower value before the W will be easier for starting in cold weather, and vice versa for values after the W.
Toyota recommends using Genuine Toyota Motor Oil, but we’ve included a few API-certified alternatives that can work as well:

How often to change the oil on a 2019 Toyota RAV4

Generally, it’s recommended you change synthetic oil on newer RAV4s every 12 months or 10,000 miles, though this will be different depending on the driving conditions you’re used to, or even the type of oil you use. Ideally, you should have your oil changed before every 7,500 miles.
You should also keep an eye out for the following signs that it’s time for an oil change:
  • Your oil has a dark color (dark brown or black as opposed to tan or amber)
  • Your check engine oil light is on
  • A noticeable drop in fuel efficiency (you’re using more gas than usual for routine trips)
  • Consistently stalling or overheating engine
Checking your oil is just as important as changing it—and if you do it regularly enough, you may be able to notice a problem before it worsens.

How to change your oil and oil filter

You can change your oil right at home, though if it’s your first time you should probably get some help. It’s a little bit of a technical process.
To start off, you should get:
  • A jack and jack stand to raise your car
  • A drain bolt wrench
  • An oil filter wrench (this is a specialized tool you’ll have to get from a dealer)
  • A filter and drain pan to catch the old oil
  • Gloves and a funnel to make the process less messy
Of course, don’t forget to have a 5-quart container of your chosen oil, along with a brand-new oil filter. Follow the following steps once you’re ready.
  1. First, make sure your RAV4 is parked on a level surface.
  2. Turn your engine on and let it reach a normal operating temperature before turning it off and waiting for a few minutes so the oil can drop back into its pan.
  3. Raise the car using a floor jack and jack stand.
  4. Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
  5. Place a drain pan under the drain plug, and remove the plug using the wrench. Let the oil drain into the pan completely. Be careful—the oil may be hot.
  6. Using the oil filter wrench, loosen the oil filter and remove it by hand. This will have some oil in it, so keep your drain pan on hand to catch any excess oil.
  7. Screw in the new oil filter and drain plug using the right wrenches.
  8. Pour in the new engine oil through the filler opening. Reinstall the cap securely.
When you’re done, restart your engine and check for any leaks.
Safely dispose of the waste oil
according to local regulations. You should also check your engine oil to make sure you didn’t add too little or too much oil.
