2015 Kia Optima 2.4 engine oil capacity

Let’s begin at the beginning: The Kia Optima 2.4 has an oil capacity of 5.1 quarts.
The “2.4” in the Optima’s name here refers to its 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine. The “2.4” is a measure of the engine’s displacement—or the volume that the four cylinders take up. This is not the same thing as the oil capacity, so make sure not to get them mixed up.

What oil type does a 2015 Kia Optima 2.4 require?

Your Kia Optima needs 5.1 quarts of oil, but not just any old oil will do. There are a lot of different kinds of oil out there, and putting the incorrect oil in an engine can have very bad results. The oil that’s recommended by Kia for an Optima 2.4 is a premium grade 5W-20 oil, and it’s important to adhere to Kia’s instructions.
If you’re wondering what those random letters and numbers mean, we’ve got you covered. The “W” is for winter, and the numbers are an indication of how thick the oil is. The 5 lets us know that this oil stays thin during very cold weather, and the 20 tells us that it’s going to have a low viscosity (thickness) even when the temperature’s warmer.
This means that this oil is going to perform well under a broad range of conditions, and the low viscosity allows it to easily flow through the engine parts and help keep them lubricated and protected.
Synthetic motor oil is okay, as long as it’s a premium grade and has the same specifications. Look for the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal on the label.

When to change the oil in your 2015 Kia Optima 2.4

So now that you know what kind and how much, how often do you need to change the oil on your Optima?
Kia
states that you should change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or about every 6 months if you’re not a big driver.
To make sure you’re changing the oil when it needs it, check your oil level regularly, like every other time you fill up your gas tank. Watch for these indicators that you might be due for an oil change:
  • Darker color: clean oil is tan or light brown, while oil that’s due for a change will look dark brown or black
  • Oil that is granular in texture
  • Unusual odors like burning or smoky smells
  • Poor vehicle performance

Changing your oil and oil filter

Ready for an
oil change
? Let’s get it done! Begin by gathering up your tools and materials: you’ll want a pan to catch the old oil, some rags, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench that will work for your oil filter. Make sure you buy a new oil filter and at least 5.1 quarts of premium 5W-20 engine oil as well.
Begin by starting your Kia and letting it run for a short while until it gets to normal operating temperature—typically, this should only take a few minutes unless it’s really cold. Once things are up to temp, turn your car off, pop the hood, and proceed as follows:
  • Unscrew the oil cap
  • Carefully get below your engine and take out the oil drain bolt and washer, and let the used oil drain into the pan
  • Take out the old oil filter and finish allowing the oil to drain
  • Put in the new filter
  • Using a new washer, replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Fill the engine with the fresh oil and put the cap back on
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Check with the dipstick to make sure that you’ve added the correct amount of oil, and then tighten things back up. Start the engine and let it run for a while as you monitor closely for any leaks.
Don’t dump the used oil on the ground, into the drain, or throw it in your trash bin.  Place it in a properly closed container and bring it to a recycling center. Some automotive stores will accept used oil for recycling, and your city’s garbage haulers may even take used oil if it’s in an approved container and placed next to the bin—just check your local regulations, first.
