2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L engine oil capacity

First things first, let’s dive into the titular question. The 2010 Mazda CX-7 S models have a 2.3-liter V4 engine that has an oil capacity of 6.0 quarts or 5.7 liters. This applies to the 2010 Mazda CX-7 S Grand Touring and S Touring trims.
There are a few essential things to keep in mind about your 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L oil capacity.
  • Oil capacity is not the same as engine displacement. In this case, the 2.3-liter engine refers to the engine displacement or the total volume swept by your engine's pistons. Oil capacity is the amount of oil needed to properly lubricate that engine—6.0 qt, or 5.7L, in this case
  • The oil capacity is usually given as the oil capacity when replacing the oil filter, which is recommended each time you change your oil
  • The I models of the 2010 Mazda CX-7 (SV and Sport trims)have a 2.5-liter engine and a different oil capacity. These models require 5.3 qt or 5.0 L of engine oil

What kind of oil does a 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L need?

So now you know that you will need 6.0 qt of oil for your 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L, but which oil is best for your engine?
Mazda
recommends using 5W-30 synthetic motor oil. To maintain optimal performance it is best to stick to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Now you might be thinking, “okay that’s great, but what the heck does 5W-30 synthetic oil mean?” If you are, we won’t leave you hanging.
The numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity at different temperatures, often referred to as “oil weight”. The “W” stands for winter, and the number before tells you how viscous the oil is in winter conditions. So a “5W” oil behaves like a 5-weight oil at 0°F, which is relatively thin.
The “30” refers to the oil’s viscosity at normal operating temperatures of 212°F. This doesn’t mean it gets thicker at high heat, but that it behaves like a 30-weight oil at the temperatures.
In other words, you want a 5W-30 engine oil because it remains thin at both normal engine temperature and cold external temperatures. The consistent low viscosity means less wear and tear on your engine.

How often to change the oil on a 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L

One of the benefits of using synthetic motor oil is that you can go longer between oil changes. Mazda recommends changing the oil on your 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.3L every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, but that can often extend up to 10,000 miles. If you don’t drive a lot, then changing your oil every six months is usually a good rule of thumb to follow.
Those are some pretty large ranges, and the reality is that the best practice is to check your oil level and condition regularly. Check your oil once a month, and look out for the following signs that it is time to change your oil:
  • Dark brown or black oil. Clean oil is light brown or amber, and transparent.
  • Oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • Scents of smoke, oil, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle's performance, like power or mileage

How to change your oil and oil filter

You now have all the information that you need to purchase your oil and get ready for an oil change. Of course, you can always just take your car to the shop, but changing your car’s oil is a pretty straightforward affair if you want to save some money and do it yourself.
First, you’ll need to gather some
essential car tools and supplies
. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, and of course the replacement filter and six quarts of 5W-30 synthetic engine oil.
Now, just follow these steps:
  • Run your engine for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature.
  • Shut off the engine, open the hood, locate the oil fill cap, and remove it
  • Under the engine, locate and remove the oil drain bolt and washer and drain the oil into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and let the oil continue to drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Once all the oil has drained, replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft.
  • Fill the engine with the new oil
  • Use your dipstick to check that there is enough oil
  • Replace the fill cap
Once you’re done, run your engine for a few minutes and check to make sure there are no leaks.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Finally, clean up your oil responsibly. Don’t just throw it in the garbage or down the drain. Put it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center.
