background
The 2005 Dodge Magnum is a handsome vehicle with a style akin to a station wagon. While it has lots of safety features for its family-first approach, the engine doesn’t pick up as quickly as one would like and there are limited transmission options. Regardless, to keep it running smoothly, you need to know its engine oil capacity.
If you own a vehicle on the high end of the price spectrum, there are new expenses to endure—starting with higher insurance rates and
car maintenance
fees. But if you own a 2005 Dodge Magnum, one area where you can cut costs is the oil change arena. You can do it yourself, but you need to follow the directions to do it successfully.
If you lost the manual or require more background information on the 2005 Dodge Magnum oil capacity, you’ve come to the right place.

2005 Dodge Magnum engine oil capacity

First things first: how much oil does a 2005 Dodge Magnum need?
The standard 2.7 L V6 engine that powers your 2005 Dodge Magnum has an oil capacity of 6 quarts or 5.7 liters.
Make sure you don’t confuse your
engine’s displacement
—the 2.7-liter volume its cylinders take up—with its oil capacity, which refers to the amount of oil required for each oil change. Engine displacement is not the same thing as oil capacity, so never assume the numbers are interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2005 Dodge Magnum need?

Since we’ve schooled you on oil capacity and its meaning, let’s go over what kind of oil you should use. You don’t want to buy just any type of oil—buy 5W-30 synthetic oil.
Want to know what those numbers mean? Let’s discuss. The numbers are related to the oil’s viscosity—how thick it is—while the “W” stands for winter. And the number 5? That tells us the oil has low viscosity at0°F. The number 30 tells us it’s also a thinner oil when the temperature reaches 212°F or 100°C.
When you buy oil, you want a type that will perform well in different types of weather. If the viscosity is low, you’ll see less
wear and tear
. If the oil is synthetic, that means it’s created from artificial ingredients. Premium synthetic oil is also a solid option.

How often to change oil on a 2005 Dodge Magnum

Hooray! You can now change the oil on your 2005 Dodge Magnum, thanks to your knowledge of oil capacity and type, so let’s get to
changing your oil
There are guidelines to follow when it comes to what Chrysler says about changing your oil. Try to stick to a schedule of every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.
While there isn't a direction given as to how often to change your oil if you are using synthetic, you can safely assume oil changes can be done less frequently than if you used
conventional oil
. Experts recommend those oil changes can be done every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
But that’s a lot of leeway. To ensure you’re changing oil at the right time,
check your oil
level every 250 miles or weekly. Look out for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Engine makes unfamiliar noises
  • Any new smells, like oil, smoke, or burning
  • A change in how your vehicle performs

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you are ready to change the oil, you need to gather some items:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement filter
  • Six quarts of premium 5W-30 engine oil
Start by running the engine to normal operating temperature. In normal conditions, it won’t take longer than five minutes. Once you get there, shut off the engine, pop the hood and follow these steps:
  • Unscrew the oil fill cap
  • Roll beneath the engine and take off the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Take off the old filter while the oil drains
  • Put on a new filter
  • Use a new washer to tighten the new oil drain bolt, ensuring it’s tight to 29 lb-ft
  • Fill the engine with new oil and put the cap back on
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
You can use a dipstick to make sure you added enough oil. When that’s done, turn on the vehicle and monitor for leaks. If you did it right, your
oil pressure light
should turn off.
Finally, make sure you clean up. Don’t dispose of dirty oil on the ground or in the garbage. Place it in a sealed container and recycle it at your local auto shop.
