background
A 1966 Ford Mustang will either have a bolt pattern of 4x4.5 (or 4 over 4.5) or 5x4.5 (or 5 over 4.5), meaning there are either 4 or 5 bolts on each wheel to form a circle with a diameter of 4.5 inches.
1966 was the second model year for the legendary Ford Mustang pony car. If you’ve recently inherited your pops’ old ‘66 Mustang, chances are you’re going to want to think about putting a fresh set of wheels on it. In order to do that, you’re going to need to know its bolt pattern to make sure you buy wheels that fit it properly!

1966 Mustang bolt pattern

Most Ford Mustangs have a five-bolt pattern, but some first-generation models (1965-1973 model years) had four-bolt patterns. That means your ‘66 Mustang will either have a bolt pattern of 5x4.5 or 4x4.5. If you’re not used to this notation, the bolt pattern of any car is expressed in the following terms:
# of bolts x diameter of the circle they form
If you have a 1966 Mustang with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, each wheel will have five lugs that form a circle with a diameter of 4.5 inches. Even if you have one with a 4x4.5 bolt pattern, it will still form a 4.5-inch circle, but with four lugs.
If you want to swap out your pony’s wheels, however, you’ll need some more information than just your lug pattern. Here’s what you’ll need to know about your 1966 Ford Mustang to get the right wheels and put them on properly:
  • Factory wheel size: 14” to 16”
  • Stud size: 1/2"x20mm
  • Offset: 15 to 25 mm
  • Center bore: 63.4

How to measure your Mustang’s bolt pattern

Now that should be enough information to get you going on your search for a new set of tires for your ‘66 Mustang! But if you want to double-check our numbers for yourself, there’s a simple way to do it.
First, grab a measuring tape or ruler. If your wheels have a four-bolt pattern, measure the distance from the center of one lug to the center of the opposite lug. If your Mustang’s wheels have a 5-bolt pattern, measure from the center of one bolt to the outside edge of one of the two bolts directly across from it.
Here’s a helpful visual aid
explaining how to measure the diameter of different bolt patterns.
Pro Tip The diameter is the second number in your bolt pattern formula and the number of lugs is the first!

How to optimize your Ford’s insurance coverage

It’s quite possible that your 1966 Ford Mustang has been heavily modified since it originally popped out of the factory nearly six decades ago. When you insure it, your insurance provider will want to take into account all of the various modifications that have gone into it, including any new wheels you may have recently added.
Because of this, it’s always a good idea to shop around for a new
car insurance
policy whenever you make a significant modification to your car since your current provider might raise your prices to make your
Ford insurance cost
higher than what another company might offer you.
That’s where the
Jerry
app comes in. Jerry can search through quotes for your Mustang’s insurance from over 55 top insurers in a matter of 45 seconds, sorting the very best deals into a shortlist for you to choose from. This will take the hassle out of car insurance shopping, and it’ll save you money!

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
