Rebuilt title car: What you need to know

A
rebuilt title
certifies that a car has been repaired to meet safety standards after an insurance company has declared it a total loss. Here’s what you can expect:
  • Salvage title: A total loss car will first be issued a Michigan salvage title, which makes the car illegal to operate on public roadways in Michigan.
  • Rebuilt salvage title: A
    salvage title can be replaced
with a rebuilt title after the necessary repairs, making it legal to drive on the streets again.
A rebuilt title is not considered a
clean title
. However, it certifies that the necessary repairs have been made and a licensed inspector has declared the salvage car safe to drive again.

How to get a rebuilt title in Michigan

There are a few steps to make a totaled car street legal again with a Michigan rebuilt title. Expect the process to cost around $115 and to take 30 to 60 days—not including any
car repairs
!

Step 1: Apply for the salvage title

You’ll need to submit an application for a salvage title if you want to
keep your totaled car
. Submit the application at your local branch of the Michigan Secretary of State.

Step 2: Make the necessary repairs to your vehicle

It’s best to get a certified mechanic to repair a totaled vehicle. Once the vehicle is repaired, the mechanic who performed the repairs must fill out Part 4 of the
TR-13A form
to certify the repairs.

Step 3: Have the repaired vehicle inspected

After you’ve got the form from your mechanic, bring the rebuilt salvage vehicle to a certified salvage inspector with payment for a $100 fee. The inspector will:
  • Check the ownership of all the parts used to repair the vehicle
  • Check vehicle compliance with the requirements of the Michigan Vehicle Code
  • Complete and issue you a TR-13B Salvage Vehicle Recertification form.

Step 4: Essential documents for a rebuilt Michigan title

You will need to bring the following to your local Secretary of State branch office:
  • Completed Application for Salvage Vehicle Inspection (TR13-A)
  • Completed Salvage Vehicle Recertification (TR13-B)
  • The salvage title
You’ll also have to pay a $15 Michigan title fee. Note that the title fee changes to $16 if you’re adding or removing
a car lien
.
Once you've obtained your rebuilt title, it's time to head back to the Michigan SOS office to
register your car
.
