For $745, the Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package boosts the towing capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 pounds and the payload capacity from 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. But if you have more heavy-duty tasks, you may need to stretch your budget for a
Ford F-150
or
Ford Ranger
.
The Maverick is a brand-new compact truck that Ford welcomed to the lineup in 2022. Its innovative design boasts attractive aesthetics and creates valuable space, in both the cabin and bed. Not to mention its efficient powertrains!
However, they are still working out some tweaks. Halfway through its debut year, they realized the front-wheel-drive model couldn't live up to the towing capacity advertised in the 4K Tow Package. So let’s take a look at what Ford decided to do and whether or not the 4K Tow Package is still worth it.

What is the Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package?

The 4K Tow Package is an optional add-on for the Ford Maverick that increases towing and payload capacity. It is exclusively available on AWD models that are equipped with the Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 engine
If your Ford Maverick is FWD or is equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine, it will not qualify for the 4K Tow Package. However, this is only a recent development.
About mid-way through its debut year in 2022,
Ford Authority
announced that you would no longer be able to add the 4K Tow Package to FWD models. After further testing, it became clear that the FWD Mavericks couldn’t handle the task of towing 4,000 pounds. Fortunately, Ford offered re-order options and Open Bonus Cash as compensation for the miscalculation.
Nevertheless, the Ford Maverick AWD models are still fully capable of being equipped with the 4K Tow Package—so let’s take a look at everything that’s included!

How much is a Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package?

So how much will this extra package set you back? Good news! The Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package is only $745, which feels like one heck of a value considering you double your towing capacity and get seven new features and upgrades.
But it is worth mentioning again that AWD is required to get the 4K Tow Package, which costs an additional $2,220. So technically, it costs $2,965 in total to add.

Is the 4K Tow Package worth it?

With an underwhelming base towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, you’ll be limited to hauling bike racks or small fishing boats. For some, that satisfies all their needs. But for others, 4,000 pounds is necessary to haul their camping equipment or utility trailers.
If you identify with the latter group, the Ford Maverick with the 4k Tow Package is absolutely worth it! Even after adding the towing package and required all-wheel-drive, the Ford Maverick still doesn’t stretch your budget too much, with an estimated price of $25,560.
However, you may want to ask your bank for a bigger
car loan
if you need a Ford truck with more power! Let’s take a look at the price and capacity ratings for towing packages available on the F-150 and the Ranger.

Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package vs. Ford F-150 Max Trailer Tow Package

The 2023 Ford F-150’s towing capacity starts at 5,000 pounds—already more than the Maverick after adding the 4K Towing Package. But when equipped with a larger engine and the Max Trailer Tow Package, the Ford F-150 has the potential to haul a whopping 11,200 pounds (and even 14,000 pounds in some rare configurations). However, the base MSRP is just over $35,000, so this type of power is costly.

Ford Maverick 4K Tow Package vs. Ford Ranger Trailer Tow Package

The 2023 Ford Ranger’s towing capacity starts at 3,500 pounds and has a base MSRP of roughly $29,000. The Ford Maverick with the 4K Tow Package technically offers more power for a better value, but the Ford Ranger can surpass it when equipped with its own Trailer Tow Package, which boosts the Ranger’s towing capacity up to 7,500 pounds.

The bottom line

The Ford Maverick doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not: it’s a peppy compact truck with an affordable price tag that can handle simple everyday utility—and even a little more if you add the 4K Tow package. For these reasons, we love it and hope it sticks around the Ford lineup for a long time to come. Which seems likely: Car and Driver rated the Ford Maverick a 9.5/10 in its 2022 debut and a perfect 10/10 for the 2023 sequel.
That said, it’s no heavy-lifting machine like its iconic counterparts in the Ford F-150 and the Ford Ranger. You should trust these trucks if you have tougher tasks to handle.
