What is the 2005 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Special Edition?

The 2005 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Special Edition was added to the lineup in the final year of the model's production as a sweet send-off to the beloved flagship sedan. Kelly Blue Book prices a used Buick Park Avenue Ultra Special Edition anywhere between $2,874 and $5,499— but with only 3,000 of them ever made, you may face an uphill climb finding one of these rare rides yourself.

2005 Park Avenue Ultra overview

The Park Avenue wasn’t Buick’s most famous model on the market, yet it holds a special place in the hearts of car connoisseurs for its refined and restrained style. Before we get into the details of the Ultra Special Edition, let's take a look at what the base trim of the Park Avenue has to offer.
Although it boasts a shorter production run than others in its family—like the LaSabre or Electra—Buick’s Park Avenue still offered people plenty to swoon over. Drivers especially note the smooth and quiet ride, a staple of many Buick models.
Making that ride all the more enjoyable is the spacious and luxurious interior. With 207 inches of length, the Park Avenue offers
plenty of room
for those in both the front and back seats. Plus, elegant touches like burled walnut woodgrain trim and leather upholstery help it earn its title as a luxury sedan.
A standard V6 engine with 205 horsepower gives the mighty four-door a surprising pep in its step. That said, it’s been noted that without the available Gran Touring package, the suspension leaves a bit to be desired—as does the relatively low fuel mileage, which comes in at a combined 19.3 mpg.
The Park Avenue Ultra, the only other trim option, steps up its game with a supercharged engine, as well as features like OnStar assistance.
Other stand-out features on the standard Park Avenue trim include:
Key specs
  • $35,555 starting MSRP, Kelly Blue Book value of between $2,874 and $5,499
  • 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine
  • 205 hp @ 5200 RPM
  • 230 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 RPM
  • 4-star NHTSA rating
  • 6 speaker sound system
  • Heated mirrors

What’s special about the Special Edition?

In 2005, Buick commemorated the final year of production for the Park Avenue with a special edition of the Park Avenue Ultra.
The Park Avenue Ultra Special Edition only offers one distinct advantage over its predecessors: a more sophisticated appearance
The Special Edition appearance package came with special badging, standard 17-inch chrome wheels, electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, and heated outside rearview mirrors with turn signals. Upping the exclusivity factor, only a few hundred of the models were offered with a black and platinum two-tone exterior
The Ultra Special Edition still boasted the supercharged engine that bumped the horsepower up to 240, but at a bit of a cost to the fuel economy, which sits at 18 mpg in the city.
While the starting price for a standard Buick Park Avenue averages about $2,874 for a used model, the Ultra Special Edition starts at just $3,491, making it a reasonable bump up for most buyers who are willing to spend a bit more for style and speed.

2005 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Special Edition vs Ultra

The Buick Park Avenue offers just one trim level above the base model: The Ultra. The Ultra was offered both with and without the Special Edition package, and most of the differences between the two are simply aesthetic. For the Kelly Blue Book value of $2,874, which is about $600 less than the Special Edition version, the Ultra includes:
  • Supercharged 6-cylinder engine with 240 hp
  • Optional front bucket seats
  • 17-inch wheels
  • Gran Touring suspension
  • OnStar assistance
  • Traction/anti skid control
The Special Edition package includes all of these features, but adds style with the special badging and 17-inch chrome wheels, as well as some additional color packages. So, is the Special Edition trim a better buy? If rarity is important to you, and owning one of only 3,000 of models that were ever made sounds worth dropping some extra cash, go for it.
However, if the few cosmetic upgrades don’t catch your eye, it may be worth saving some extra cash and opting for the regular Ultra.
