background
The most common problems drivers experience in the 2020 GMC Terrain include a glitchy infotainment system, some acceleration issues, and occasional—but serious—brake failure.
The Terrain is a solid compact SUV with all the essentials you need, from a spacious interior to good fuel economy to a peppy engine. It may not be the top player in the highly competitive crossover genre, but this
GMC
has plenty to offer.
Unfortunately, it comes with a few different issues, too. While the 2020 GMC Terrain doesn’t have a ton of problems to report, it’s important to know what to look out for when you’re driving one. Here are the most common Terrain problems and potential
car repairs
that may be necessary.

The most common 2020 GMC Terrain problems

The GMC Terrain does have its problems, but it doesn’t have that many. And those that exist aren’t too bad… for the most part. Let’s get into the details.
The 2020 Terrain earns a five-star
safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA). Regardless, it has one recall on its record, along with 38 official customer complaints.
GMC issued a recall for the 2020 Terrain due to missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator, which could lead to transmission oil leaking.
Leaking transmission fluid
may cause a loss of propulsion that can potentially lead to an accident or increase the risk of fire.
Other than that, customer complaints tend to revolve around three key areas: the electrical system, the powertrain and engine, and the service brakes. While most of these common issues are mere inconveniences, some could pose a serious risk to your safety on the road.

Electrical system

This common issue is actually a handful of issues under the same
electrical component
umbrella. Luckily, most of them aren’t too severe on a mechanical level, but they’re less than ideal nonetheless.
Some drivers experience the infotainment system randomly shutting off for short periods, including inconsistent connections with Bluetooth and USB ports. The same electrical issue sometimes causes issues with the parking camera or disables the blinkers.

Powertrain and engine

The most severe issue with the engine was a defect that caused excess oil loss, which resulted in needing a new engine. This sometimes came after unsuccessful acceleration, the
 check engine light
coming on, and the traction control light illuminating. Acceleration issues were also sometimes accompanied by a screeching metal sound.
Other complaints included issues with the gear shifts, claiming the 2020 Terrain wouldn’t shift into ninth gear or that the neutral gear didn’t work at all.

Service brakes

This issue is a bit more serious, but luckily, it only accounted for seven of the 38 complaints. Drivers reported losing the ability to brake despite pressing the brake pedal down, causing at least one accident.
Also reported, the Terrain’s
parking brake
would randomly engage without outside influence. Two problems you don’t want to experience while driving!

Is the 2020 GMC Terrain reliable?

Even with these issues, the 2020 GMC Terrain earns great reliability scores in the compact crossover class. In fact, J.D. Power gave the 2020 Terrain an 82/100 rating for quality and reliability while RepairPal gave it an average 3.5/5 reliability score.
On average, the annual cost to repair a 2020 GMC Terrain is about $558, which is around average for its class. Repairs are more severe than some SUVs, but they aren’t as frequent, making it about even compared to other vehicles.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
