How to reset the Ford Mustang anti-theft system

The Ford Mustang anti-theft system has two resetting options. Both will require the use of your coded vehicle key.

One option for resetting the anti-theft system and once again regaining access to your Mustang involves inserting the key into the driver’s side door lock. You’ll want to turn it some but not all the way so as to actually unlock the door. Keep the key in that position for 40 to 60 seconds so the anti-theft system can recognize the programmed key.

Once your rough minute is up, do this same dance while turning the key in the other direction. Take your key out of the door after another 40 to 60 seconds, get into your vehicle, and start the engine. The anti-theft system should be reset and your Mustang should be ready for action again.

The other avenue for resetting the Ford Mustang’s anti-theft system will have you turn on the ignition but not the engine. Insert and turn the coded key until the electrical system turns on and leave it in this position for two to three minutes. The anti-theft light should turn off and the system should reset. It may take several passes at this for the system to recognize the programmed key, so try it again if it doesn’t work the first time.

If you either don’t have a programmed coded key fob or are unsuccessful in these system resetting attempts, you may need to bring your Mustang to a certified Ford dealership for additional assistance.

What does the anti-theft system on a Ford Mustang do?

Keep an eye on the anti-theft indicator light in your vehicle—it will illuminate for about three seconds before turning off after you remove the uncoded key if your new key programming was successful. If that light is flashing, wait 20 seconds and repeat the above steps.

If that still doesn’t work or if you don’t have the two original coded transmitter keys in the first place, you’ll need to bring your Mustang to a Ford dealership so they can code a new key for you.
