Kia
Sorento drivers involve the electrical system, powertrain, and engine. But you’ll also hear other minor complaints about visibility and power delivery.
And with an affordable starting MSRP for a midsize, the Sorento stands its ground against rivals. But while it may come with a lengthy list of positives, it’s not without problems. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a Sorento or considering buying one, here are some of the most common 2022 Kia Sorento problems.

What are the most common 2022 Kia Sorento problems?

If you’re looking for a classy, slightly rugged, comfortable SUV with plenty of powertrain options, the 2022 Kia Sorento ticks the boxes. Regardless of what trim you opt for, the Sorento offers a nicely equipped cabin with plenty of standard and optional features to maximize comfort, versatility, and efficiency. But while there are plenty of positives we can say about the 2022 Kia Sorento, it doesn’t come without faults.
Despite its four-star NHTSA safety rating and good reliability scores, the 2022 Kia Sorento received four recalls that may be cause for concern:
1. Loss of drive power
Certain 2021 to 2022 Sorento’s "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode might be impaired and can lead to a complete loss of drive power.
2. Tow hitch harness fire while parked or driving
2016 to 2022 Sorento, 2021 to 2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), and 2022 to 2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment may accumulate debris and moisture on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB), which can result in an electrical short and potential for a fire.
3. Incorrect spare tire size
Certain 2022 Kia Sorento vehicles may have an incorrect spare tire size, impairing the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the traction control system (TCS) if installed.
4. Turbocharger oil supply pipe leakage
The oil supply pipe to the turbocharger might crack on certain 2022 Kia Sorento vehicles, which can lead to an oil leak in the engine compartment.
Although the Sorento’s recalls don’t seem like anything major, if not repaired, they can lead to an increased risk of injury or damage over time. But because Kia offers a comprehensive five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty, any issues with the recalls or the vehicle itself should be covered under your new vehicle warranty.
Apart from the recalls, the 2022 Kia Sorento also received 46 official complaints filed with the NHTSA, primarily involving:
  • Electrical system
  • Powertrain
  • Engine
  • Service brakes
  • Steering
But it doesn’t stop there. While the Kia Sorento gets excellent ratings, it won’t be perfect for all drivers, which leads to other driver complaints like:
  • Poor visibility
  • Uneven power delivery from the gearbox

Is the 2022 Kia Sorento reliable?

When it comes to reliability, Kia has quickly climbed the ranks and sits up there with the likes of other brands, like
Toyota
and
Honda
. Despite four somewhat major recalls and over 40 official complaints, the 2022 Kia Sorento still receives above-average reliability ratings—but it depends on your source.
J.D. Power ranks the Sorento at 83/100 for quality and reliability, and RepairPal gives it a 4.0/5.0 for reliability, but if you ask Consumer Reports, they don’t agree. That said, the 2022 Sorento still ranked 12th in the compact SUV category and received a four-star
NHTSA safety rating
and an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2022.
But reliability scores are not the be-all for car owners. You still want to account for other car expenses, like maintenance and repairs—and lucky for Sorento owners, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. RepairPal estimates the annual repair costs for a Kia Sorento at $533, compared to $521 for compact SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models. But compared to other cars, the Sorento’s repairs are less severe and frequent.
