background
Despite great reliability ratings and reviews, the 2015 Acura RDX has a spotty history of more-than-minor inconveniences, like airbags that would sometimes unexpectedly explode and blow sharp metal fragments throughout the cab.
That, combined with some electrical wiring issues and overheating from the fuel pump, may cause a fair amount of pause for anyone looking to buy the 2015 RDX. However, despite the flaws, the issues can be repaired (if they weren’t already fixed by a previous owner), and overall, the 2015 RDX had good reviews for quality and reliability.

The most common 2015 Acura RDX problems

First, we’ll cover the better features of the 2015 RDX. It was competitively priced for its class and holds a spot on the Best Used SUVs and Best Used Luxury SUVs list from Edmunds.
Its across-trim
V6 engine
gave it a respectable 273 horsepower while still maintaining decent fuel efficiency. The model is known for its comfortable cabin with ample leg room even in the back seat. JD Power gave it an 80/100 score for quality and reliability.
But let’s talk about those exploding airbags.
The 2015 Acura RDX underwent three airbag-related recalls. Two were related to the driver frontal airbag inflator literally exploding—a phenomenon that occurred sometimes when the vehicle was exposed to heat and humidity. The explosion could send out sharp metal projectiles capable of injuring or killing the driver and occupants.
The other airbag-related recall was due to the driver frontal airbag inflator rupturing. If this happened, projectiles could explode out of the airbag unit in the case of a crash, again raising the possibility of injury or death to the driver and passengers.
There were 28 airbag complaints reported to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
. The model had another 71 complaints about issues with the vehicle’s exterior lighting.
Another big problem with the 2015 RDX was its soy-based wiring insulation. The soy-based material was aimed at benefiting the environment, but it turned out to be attractive to wild animals who would wreak havoc on the car’s undercarriage.
Other notable 2015 RDX issues include:
  • Faulty navigation system
  • Problems with the fuel pump that could lead to the engine overheating and cause another recall
  • Excessive shaking which was capable of damaging vehicle components
Still, even with all those issues, the average annual repair cost for the 2015 RDX remains fairly low.

Is the 2015 Acura RDX reliable?

According to
RepairPal
, the Acura RDX gets a 4.5 out of 5, which designates it as “excellent” in terms of the expense, frequency, and degree of average annual repairs. Its average annual repair cost is $497, which is lower than the average vehicle.
Still, if you’re going to shop for a used 2015 Acura RDX, it’s a good idea to make sure the prior owner took care of all the vehicle recalls and had the needed repairs done to ensure you and your passengers’ safety.
