background
Although it can feel like
hybrid and electric cars
are still new to the roads, the truth is these kinds of cars have been around for over a decade, which means the used hybrid market is plentiful.
Consumer Reports
has searched high and low for the best ten-year-old used hybrid cars, and they’ve found that the majority of them are
Toyotas
. Here are some of the best Toyota hybrids you can get on the road today.

What makes a car one of the best used hybrids?

Consumer Reports selected Toyota vehicles as the best used hybrids based on many criteria, but the main factors are fuel efficiency, driver satisfaction, emissions, and reliability.
As the source explains, hybrid cars don’t need to be charged, so there’s no change in driver routine, but they tend to have far better fuel efficiency than gas vehicles.
These best used hybrids are incredibly fuel efficient. Plus, all cars on the list carry a Green Choice designation, which means they have clean emissions.
In addition to those metrics, drivers also get input on the best used hybrids. Drivers of all hybrid vehicles are surveyed on if they’d buy them again, plus give opinions on reliability, comfort, ease of control, and more.
Cars with the highest overall ratings are selected as best used hybrids.

2012 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is a great, ten-year-old hybrid vehicle. With a price range between roughly $13,000 and $14,000, this is an affordable option that packs a punch. Owners report that the overall fuel economy is 46mpg, which is truly outstanding.
On top of that, the 2012 Toyota Prius has a comfortable and roomy interior, safety features like brake assist for emergencies, and a relatively low ownership cost.

2012 Toyota Camry

Although this car is ten years old, the engine options (a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder or a 3.5-liter, V6, both paired with an electric motor) pack a punch and make for a smooth ride. Overall fuel economy isn’t as good as the Toyota Prius, but still impressive at 27mpg.
With the 2012 Toyota Camry, drivers will also enjoy a comfortable interior, large trunk, and a reasonable price range between $10,000 and $13,000.

2012 Toyota Prius V

The Toyota Prius V is essentially just a slightly bigger version of the original Toyota Prius, so it’s no surprise that it makes this list, too. Owners report the overall fuel economy to be 40mpg, and the price sits at a comfortable $13,050.
Because it’s a bit bigger than the Prius, expect more room for the driver and passengers in the Toyota Prius V, plus a bit more cargo space. Not to mention, safety features are abundant, despite the car’s age.

2012 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander
makes the list as one of the best used hybrids largely for its powerful hybrid engine. Although overall fuel economy is just 20mpg, the 2012 Toyota Highlander has serious power for a car of its age, because it pairs the electric motor with a 3.5-liter, V6 engine.
The engine isn’t only powerful, but it also allows for a smooth and quiet ride, while giving drivers a four-wheel drive option, too. Prices for the 2012 Toyota Highlander range from just under $14,000 to about $17,000.
