background
Cars.com just released its
2022 American-Made Index
, a ranking of American-made cars based on just that—precisely how American-made they are.
Tesla
, the electric vehicle manufacturer based in Texas, has four models—its entire lineup—in the top 10.
The
Model Y
and
Model 3
, both assembled in California, are ranked first and second, respectively.
Honda
, based in Tokyo, also has four models in the top 10. The
Lincoln Corsair
(#3) and
Jeep Cherokee
(#7) round out the leaderboard.
Here are more details about the 2022 report and the methodology behind it.

Highlights from the 2022 American Made Index

  • 2022 marks Lincoln’s first appearance in the top 10 thanks to an increase of almost 50% in its U.S. and Canadian-made parts—it ranked #64 in 2021
  • The 2022 Honda Passport is made of 75% U.S. and Canadian-made parts, the highest of any on the list
  • 14 hybrid or electric vehicles, including the four Tesla models, made the 2022 rankings
Cars.com editor-in-chief Jenni Newman commented on Tesla’s impressive rankings:
"That Tesla—an American-made all-electric make—appears frequently and high up on the list may indicate a coming alignment of market forces that could really explode once we break through microchip supply chain issues, especially if gas prices remain historically high.”

Here’s how the American-Made Index rankings are determined

Cars.com analyzes five primary factors about a car’s production to determine its ranking:
  • Location of final assembly
  • Percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts
  • Country of origin for available engines
  • Country of origin for available transmissions
  • U.S. manufacturing employees relative to the automaker’s footprint
Information about the origin of a car’s parts is made available by virtue of the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA), a regulation in effect since 1994 that requires automakers to report what percentage of a car’s parts, by value, are from the United States or Canada. This information appears on a car’s window sticker at a dealership.
The AALA doesn’t distinguish between parts made in the United States and those made in Canada. The index compensates for this by also considering the country of origin of a car’s engine and transmission, for which more specific information is available. Cars.com doesn’t disclose exactly how they weigh each of these factors, but more information is available
in the report.
To account for an automaker’s impact on the American workforce, the index compares a company’s U.S. manufacturing workforce to the number of cars it produces in a year—that score is applied to all of a company’s models.
Models are ranked on a 100-point scale. Related models, like the
Honda Civic
sedan and hatchback, are grouped together, but a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version of a model is considered separately.
Companies aren’t required to submit AALA information for vehicles that weigh more than 8,500 pounds, like full-size vans, so those models aren’t considered in the rankings. Companies that build fewer than 1,000 cars in a year are excluded for the same reason.
