The top 10 most-stolen vehicles from 2019-2020

As
Thomas
lays out, there are 10 vehicles that carjackers just seem to prey on more than others. Whether it’s due to how common each vehicle is, or simply their resale value on the black market, the 10 most-stolen cars include these vehicles:
  1. 2006 Ford F-150
  2. 2004 Chevy 1500
  3. 2000 Honda Civic
  4. 1997 Honda Accord
  5. 2007 and 2019 Toyota Camry
  6. 2015 and 2020 Nissan Altima
  7. 2008 and 2015 GMC Pickup
  8. 2018 and 2020 Toyota Corolla
  9. 2000 and 2001 Honda CR-V
Sorry Ford F-150 fans; you’d better keep those doors locked. And considering the Ford F-150 is still the most popular vehicle in America (and has a hot new EV model, too), F-150 owners may be on guard more than other drivers for car theft.

Are key fobs making it easier for thieves to commit car theft?

The same Thomas article explains that many of the carjackings that occurred happened to owners of vehicles that use key fobs. When a thief wants to break into a car that uses a key fob, they may perform what’s called a relay attack.
This form of car theft uses a relay box to bounce the key fob’s signal (which may be located inside, while the vehicle is parked at the curb) in order to unlock the vehicle’s doors. From there, the thieves can easily turn on the engine and drive away—an easy way to commit car theft.

Is Ford doing anything to prevent car theft of its F-150s?

Considering that their best-selling truck is the most-stolen vehicle in America, it makes sense that Ford has partnered with ADT to offer AI-based camera monitoring and encrypted key fob signaling to ward off car theft. As an owner, it’s also a good idea to leave security lights on, park your vehicle inside the garage (if possible), and report suspicious activity, if you see any.
