Cavender Castle

is a family home and wedding venue in the North Georgia Mountains. The original owners built it as a replica of a Scottish castle they had stayed in on vacation and planned to turn it into a winery. But unfortunately, nature had other plans, and it did not work out.

In 1999, Rick and Cindy Durham purchased the property and completely renovated it. In 2004, Cavender Castle was reopened as a restaurant. Today, you can dine there throughout the week or rent the venue for private events, such as

wedding receptions

and rehearsal dinners.

Wilder Tower

What is the story of Wilder Tower?

The Wilder Tower is stop #6 on the

Chickamauga Battlefield Automobile Tour

—and an important part of Georgia history. The 86-foot stone castle is a monument to the Wilder Brigade, led by Union General John Wilder. The group had the only Union success at the southern end of the Chickamauga Battlefield and halted advancing Confederates several times.

When the tower is open, visitors are allowed to climb to the top (up 136 steps!) and access an open-air observation deck. The area is also home to dozens of statues and monuments commemorating the war and the soldiers who fought in it.

How to visit Wilder Tower

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

is open daily, except for Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. It is free to drive through the park, and there is no charge for most of the attractions, except for Lookout Mountain Battlefield, which has a $10 entrance fee.

Pro Tip The monument closes quite often in summer when hornets decide to nest in the tower. If you’d like to climb to the top, it may be best to visit in cooler weather.

is a private home, around which lots of rumors circulate. Among them is that Ozzy Osbourne once lived there, and the owner is a witch. Sadly, none of those stories are true.

What is true is that the castle (which is really more of a château) sat vacant and unfinished for many years due to a lack of funds. Today, it is (mostly) complete and has five towers and five levels. The owners hope to add outbuildings someday, including a stable for horses.

It sits high up on the property because it’s on a

floodplain

, and the owners wanted privacy, but passers-by can see it from the road.

How to visit Covington Castle

Covington Castle is a private home, and the owners do not give tours. However, you can see the building from the road in late fall and winter, when the leaves are off the trees.

Rhodes Castle

was built in 1904 by furniture magnate Amos G. Rhodes. The Romanesque-style revival mansion cost nearly $50,000 (the equivalent of about $1.6 million today). It is constructed of Stone Mountain granite and features a grand mahogany staircase and a series of painted glass windows.

Today, the palace is home to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and a venue for social and corporate events.

was unoccupied for many years but appears to be operating as a bed & breakfast once again. The brick and granite Victorian Mansion was built in 1896 by a man named Mr. Colley, who wanted a castle-like home for his family to live in.

Rumor has it that strange occurrences began shortly after Mr. Colley's family moved into the home. A ghost named Mary (who turned lights off and on) and a spectral cat were known to make frequent appearances. It is also said that Mr. Colley himself stopped in for visits long after his death.

Many visitors spend a night hoping for the chance at a paranormal experience.
