There are few things in life more aggravating than not getting a clear answer! Here’s what you need to know.
You should wait at least 48 hours before driving on a new asphalt driveway. More importantly, you should avoid parking on it for at least 14 days.
The reason is because of how long it takes asphalt to harden as opposed to how long it takes to cure. Fresh asphalt takes at least a couple of days to dry and harden up enough on the surface to be safe to drive and walk on.
But parking would mean putting around two tons or more of weight on something that isn’t fully dry below the surface, which can lead to scarring, under-surface damage, and depressions. So for best results, you should wait at least two weeks before parking on your new driveway
. Note that in hot summer months where it takes longer for the asphalt to set, you may have to wait up to a month. And even then, it will take your driveway six to 12 months to fully cure. But if you drive a fairly light car, it shouldn’t be an issue.
Asphalt is a great choice for driveway material, but it can be expensive. If you’re looking to save money elsewhere in order to help, go to Jerry
