How do I open a Volkswagen Passat gas tank?

I’m on vacation and the rental car company gave me a Volkswagen Passat. The car is running on empty, but I’m sitting here at the gas station not knowing how to open the gas tank. What am I doing wrong?

You’re not doing anything wrong—opening the gas tank on
rental cars
isn’t as straightforward as most people think. The
Volkswagen Passat
can be confusing, as it doesn’t have anything in the cabin to open the gas tank. Use these steps to open a Volkswagen Passat gas tank:
  1. Shut the engine off.
  2. Make sure the doors are unlocked.
  3. Hop around to the rear passenger’s side of the vehicle. Here you should see the fuel filler door.
  4. The fuel door uses a spring-loaded mechanism, so all you need to do is push the left upper corner of the door and it should pop open.
Making sure you’re not
driving on an empty tank of gas
for too long is an important part of vehicle maintenance—whether you own the car or not! So it is taking some time to make sure you’ve got the right
car insurance
for your rental or personal Passat.
