How do I change a Chevy Malibu’s headlights without removing the bumper?
The left headlight on my Chevy Malibu is busted and I’m planning on replacing it this weekend. I really don’t want to have to take the whole bumper off for this one thing, so is there some way I can change a Chevy Malibu’s headlights without removing the bumper first?

This is a good question—it is possible to replace the headlights on a Chevy Malibu without fully removing the bumper cover, but you’ll still need to loosen it, which will require a 9 or 10 mm socket wrench with an extension.
For an abbreviated guide on the full process, follow the steps below:
- Pop out the fittings holding the left side of the bumper cover in place, but leave the bottom-most one in
- Pull the bumper cover back and find the #1 bolt on the side finder (usually located behind and near the top of where the bumper cover is fitted to your vehicle)
- Remove the bolt with a 9 or 10 mm socket wrench that has an extension, enabling you to reach the bolt without fully removing the bumper cover
- Once that bolt is removed, pull the cover back further and find the light bracket bolt and remove it
- Push down and out on the headlight itself to pop it out
- Disconnect all wiring and remove the faulty headlight
- Replace the headlight and do the process in reverse
That said, it’s always a good idea to look up a tutorial or try to find a manual online that details how to replace the headlights on your specific make and model. Watching a couple videos of the process can also help as well.
