You could be right! To adjust the timing belt tensioner, you’ll need to loosen the bolts securing the tensioner and adjust the belt to its proper alignment.
All vehicles are different, so be sure to read your owner’s manual before proceeding with a tune up. When you’re ready, prepare the vehicle by parking it on a flat surface, popping the hood, and detaching the battery cables. Also, remember to put on protective eyewear.
Here are the basic steps to adjusting the timing belt tensioner:
  • Remove the cover from the timing belt
  • Loosen the bolts that secure the tensioner using a wrench
  • Confirm that the tensioner has light contact with the timing belt
  • Adjust the belt with its proper alignments (see timing marks on cam, crank, sprockets)
Once you’re done, remember to test your work! Move the pulley off the crankshaft with the wrench and turn the engine at least two complete revolutions. Check the resistance of the belt and ensure that valves and pistons do not have contact with one another.
If all is well, reattach the cover and bolts. Do not overtighten them! Reattach the battery cables and close the hood. You’re good to go!
Timing belt adjustments are complex. If you’re not accustomed to working on engines, it’s a good idea to hire a professional to adjust the timing belt tensioner.
