Among These Ugly Subarus, One Model Rose Above in a Major Way

background
Subaru
might make some of the most reliable vehicles, but some of them have very unconventional appearances. Critics might be quick to call them ugly, but we believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. After all, an "ugly car" like the BMW iX can still be spacious, efficient, and quite powerful.
In fact, some of the most valuable cars today retain their value because of their unconventional appearances. Can you guess which weird Subaru on this
HotCars
list is experiencing an unexpected spike in popularity?
The Subaru 360 had an unconventional appearance and seemed to really miss the mark.

What makes an ‘ugly’ Subaru?

Car-inspired pickups seemingly got a resurgence in 2021, so perhaps the Subaru Baja was just ahead of its time. However, even devoted Baja owners agree that the car provides merely average performance without any exceptional trucking abilities. According to
MotorTrend
, It was also a huge flop for the automaker, selling only 30,000 units in three years.
While the Subaru Legacy is typically an inoffensive car in the looks department, most of its appeal comes from a turbo engine. Without that, models from 2004-2008 just aren't worth your money. Even if you get the turbocharged GT model, any Legacy from this era might develop head gasket problems.
The Subaru Justy further proves that the Kia Soul is apparently the only successful square car in the States. Nothing about its design is particularly appealing, and Subaru neglected to give it many updates throughout its lifespan. It was rebadged as the Toyota Tank in 2016, and now you can only find it in Japan.
Even with its questionable design appeal, the Subaru BRAT is nearly at classic car status due to nostalgia. It originally sold for around $5,300, but now the models in good condition can fetch up to $10,000.

The price of this Subaru took everyone by surprise

The Subaru 360 has even less performance and aesthetic appeal than most of its siblings. Yet, according to
Hagerty
, the price of a used model quadrupled between January 2020 and January 2021. The average price in 2019 never peaked above $10,000, but one sold in October 2020 for $50,000.
It's even more impressive given the 360's retail price of $1,297 upon its release, nearly $10,000 adjusted for inflation. Subaru also blatantly referred to the car as "cheap and ugly" in its official advertisements. Hagerty speculates that the price increase is due to renewed interest in the earliest models from any given automaker. In particular, early Japanese classics are highly coveted in the collecting sphere right now.

Is the Subaru 360 even worth the money?

The good news is that you're not missing out on anything if you skip this car. Its top speed is only 50 mph, and getting there requires you to floor the pedal for 37 seconds. You'd have to avoid the highway with only 25 horsepower on tap, but at least Subaru claimed you'd get 66 mpg.
In real-world testing, Hagerty says that Consumer Reports (CR) discovered that number was closer to 35 mpg. In CR's scathing review, it deemed the 360 unacceptable for U.S. roads because of its abysmal safety standards. The car's interior was also too cramped to be functional.
If the Subaru 360 has somehow charmed you over, you might need to switch providers for a classic car insurance plan. This coverage typically isn't much more expensive than your average policy, but it has special considerations to preserve these special cars.
