The Toyota Avalon Will Be Gone After 2022

Toyota‘s flagship full-size sedan, the Avalon, will be gone after 24 years of gracing our roads. Created in 1994, the Avalon acted as an alternative to the luxury Lexus ES 350 and spanned a total of five generations. It has always been a quiet but reliable sedan that could go around without courting much attention, allowing drivers to enjoy luxurious anonymity.
Although not a luxury vehicle like its close competitors, the Toyota Avalon has always been an ideal car for many. Toyota decided to end its production in response to the North American market. As of today, the Avalon has sold 10,328 units this year compared to 18,421 sold last year.
The news first hit the headlines through Automotive News and was later confirmed by Toyota’s spokesperson. The axing may not have been a surprise since the automaker did little to advertise it, and the sedan segment has also seen many casualties.
The Avalon is not the only casualty in this sedan segment
The Toyota Avalon will soon be discontinued.
The large sedan segment has been on the decline since the rise of SUVs. Apart from the Toyota Avalon, other competitors such as Hyundai Azera, Ford Taurus, Kia Cadenza, and Chevy Impala have also died off.
The only remaining Toyota sedans for the North American market are the Corolla, Prius, and Camry. Other remaining sedans from competing brands are the Dodge Charger, Nissan Maxima, and Chrysler 300.
What does the Toyota Avalon offer?
The Avalon has built a reputation in the automobile industry for its innovation, comfort, and quality. This five-seater boasts of comfortable seats and sufficient legroom. Its fifth generation release in 2019 comes in two engine options. The first one is the 3.5-liter V-6 engine producing 301-HP paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The second option is the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine making 215 HP and 267 lb-ft. The 2.5L can get 34 MPG on the highway, while the more powerful option has 31 MPG, according to FuelEconomy.
It also features impressive safety features and driver-assist technology like Toyota’s radar-based cruise control. It comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense P, which is a fascinating addition. This kit comes with a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, automatic braking, and LED automatic high-beam headlights.
Although it is not a luxury car, the Avalon features many luxurious compositions similar to the Lexus. They include standard synthetic leather upholstery, with the top trim level having leather-trimmed front seats. It even offers a hybrid version. With many luxuries, drivers feel like they own a Lexus, but without the costly badges.
Despite those facts, its sales volumes have declined over the years to only one-quarter of what the Dodge Charger sold this year. At its peak, the Avalon sold 104.078 units, the highest ever, according to Carsalesbase.
Toyota has now discontinued two cars in a year
Toyota has now removed two vehicles from its production line in just under a year. In 2020 the company killed the hatchback Yaris. It’s likely that many more full-size sedans will face the axe in this SUV era.
Toyota, through its news release, promised to continue providing Avalon owners with the requisite parts and services. They also said that their Kentucky plant will continue producing the Lexus ES and Camry and provide employment.
