background
Electric vehicle (EV) issues like charging times and range have been hindering their popularity, but some brands are determined to change that. Though Tesla has been at the forefront of this development, the up-and-coming Lucid is threatening to overcome them with their new electric sedan.
According to
Green Car Reports
, the new Lucid Air has now made history as the longest-range EV the EPA has ever rated, as they’ve declared its range to be 520 miles. This surpasses any other EV by at least 100 miles, putting Tesla in second place.
A new EV competitor has made a grand entrance.

What sets the Lucid Air apart from other electric cars?

Depending on the Air model, the range will vary. The record-breaking 520 miles belong to the top-tier Dream Edition Range. The Grand Touring trim has an impressive 517 miles, and the most basic model still has 406 miles of range.
The wheel size also impacts range. Switching from 19-inch wheels to 21-inch wheels on the Dream Edition Range will drop the car’s range by about 40 miles. The high-power Dream Edition Performance gets about 451 miles.
Lucid has made an effort to cut down on charging time as well. The car is equipped with a 900-volt, 113 kWh battery pack and smaller compact drive units. The Air will likely be the fastest-charging EV and can potentially achieve 300 miles of range in twenty minutes, charging as fast as twenty miles in a minute.
This is good news for Air buyers, as even though its range is impressive, it’s not the most efficient EV out there—Tesla still leads the pack in that area.

Lucid plans on improving the Air

MORE: 4 Things That Impact Your EV Range
Despite its record-breaking debut, Lucid still has plans on improving the Air. The Wunderbox charger installed with the car currently helps to maximize the voltage on each charge, but it could eventually be used for bi-directional charging. This technology would allow the battery to power other cars or even houses.
Lucid also plans to give its vehicles Level 3 hands-free driving software in coming years, which will be updated remotely as soon as it’s available.
This means that the Air would be able to take control of the car for extended periods of time. But the driver still needs to be alert in case there’s a situation the computer isn’t equipped for.

When will the Air be released?

The Lucid Air was originally supposed to be released earlier this year, but now the brand is promising deliveries by the end of 2021. The Dream Edition will be first on the list, with the Grand Touring models coming a little later.
Lucid seems to be determined to come out strong on the EV market, and with its high quality and practical features, the Air has given them a promising start.
